Why Exercise Alone Isnt Enough to Lose Weight – The New York Times

For the new study, which was published in August in Current Biology, some of the scientists involved in the initiative set out to see what happens to our metabolisms when we move. They pulled data for 1,754 adults that included their doubly labeled water results, as well as measures of their body compositions and basal energy expenditure, which is how many calories they burn simply by being alive, even if they otherwise are inactive. Subtracting basal numbers from total energy expenditure gave the researchers an approximation of people’s energy expenditure from exercise and other movement, such as standing, walking and general fidgeting. Then, using statistical models, the researchers could tally whether calories burned during activity increased people’s daily energy expenditure as expect...

Impeachment: American Crime Story: Ann Coulter explained – Los Angeles Times

“Impeachment: American Crime Story” chronicles President Bill Clinton’s relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky, and how it eventually led to his impeachment — turning one of the biggest political scandals in U.S. history into a series so addictive it may as well be pulp fiction. The third episode in the new installment of Ryan Murphy’s “American Crime Story” anthology (previous seasons focused on the O.J. Simpson trial and Andrew Cunanan’s murder spree) brings together three of its nastiest characters so far — which is saying a lot given that the series is teeming with duplicitous, attention-seeking creatures of the Beltway sort. The Unbeatable, Unmeltable Appeal of Halloumi

When I was in Cyprus researching my latest cookbook, Ripe Figs, I fell in love with halloumi: the semihard, unripened, and brined cheese that is arguably the island’s most famous culinary export and—with all due respect to the fresh Wisconsin cheese curd—undoubtedly the world’s most popular squeaky cheese. Halloumi has been made in Cyprus for centuries, and traditionally, villages across the island would come together to make large batches cooperatively, with regional recipes varying from town to town. Today, this legacy can be observed in last names on the Greek side of the island like Hallumas, Halluma, and Hallumakis—a nod to the role certain families played in halloumi production. Halloumi is a staple ingredient across the Eastern Mediterran...

Pepperoni Crumbs > Bacon Bits

Pepperoni gets the most guff of the cured meat family—always the Lunchables, never the crowning glory of the charcuterie plate. But these compact rounds of salumi have so much more to offer for the savvy home cook. They’re peppery, salty, and full of fat that can be rendered to turn them into crisp miniature UFOs. “It’s a quintessential Italian American ingredient—pepperoni is one of those things that people in the United States always associate with Italian food, but it’s rarely seen in Italy,” says Angie Rito, the co-owner of Manhattan’s Don Angie and the coauthor, with Scott Tacinelli and Jamie Feldmar, of Italian American. “The flavor profile of pepperoni is spicy and garlicky with a hint of smoke, and the ingredient has a familiar and nosta...

CEO Bob Chapek Praises Park Pass Reservation System as Backbone of Domestic Theme Parks – wdwnt.com

Today during the Goldman Sachs 30th Annual Communacopia Conference, Disney CEO Bob Chapek spoke about the theme parks. He praised the Park Pass reservation system instituted by the domestic parks upon reopening during the COVID-19 pandemic. As he has mentioned before, the company saw the temporary closures as an opportunity to “reconceive the guest experience and increase return to the shareholders.” Chapek considers the reservation system the “backbone” of the operations and praised the increased yield it has produced. While the reservations themselves do not turn over a profit, they allow the company to better allocate resources. By requiring every guest to have reservations, including Annual Passholders, Disney can know precisely how many people will be in each park each day. T...
