A pill to treat COVID could be coming soon, scientists say – NJ.com

Antiviral drugs in pill form are currently in development in clinical trials, and scientists say they could be on the market within months. At least three antiviral drugs for COVID-19 are in clinical trials, with results from those clinical trials to be expected by late fall or early winter, according to Carl Dieffenbach, director of the Division of AIDS at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. “I think that we will have answers as to what these pills are capable of within the next several months,” Dieffenbach told Kaiser Health News. Dieffenbach said the frontrunner drug, called molnupiravir, is being developed by Merck & Co. and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics. The other two drugs are from Pfizer, and are known for now as PF-07321332, and AT-527. These two drug...

CDCs COVID booster shot reversal: Is the Biden administration following the science? – Fox News

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) course reversal on booster shot guidance for Americans is raising questions on whether or not the Biden administration is following the science. CDC director Rochelle Walensky broke with her vaccine advisory panel late Thursday to endorse younger at-risk people returning to work to get the Pfizer COVID-19 booster shot — a rare move that goes against the panel's recommendation. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices panel voted that young workers not get the booster and that it be given only to Americans over 65 and those over 50 with underlying medical conditions. Midnight Mass review: a personal redemption story becomes a stunning horror tale – Polygon

Netflix’s horror series Midnight Mass begins with an act of immense cruelty. A drunk driver, Riley (Zach Gilford), crashes into another car. The young woman he hit is thrown through her window, and lies dying on the rain-slicked pavement while he sits on the curb with barely a scratch. As he realizes she won’t survive, he turns to God and begins to pray, but gets no answer. These dueling cruelties — both human, in Riley’s fatal lack of care for others, and cosmic, in the abjectly random nature of his victim’s death — are a bleakly perfect tone-setter for the newest horror series from Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep director Mike Flanagan. While the show is filled to the brim with supernatural scares, it’s more concerned with the terrible things people do to each other, and the ways acc...

Michael K. Williams cause of death revealed by medical examiner – New York Post

The New York City medical examiner confirmed actor Michael K. Williams died of a drug overdose, The Post learned on Friday. Williams’ cause of death was acute intoxication from a deadly mix of fentanyl, p-fluorofentanyl, heroin and cocaine, a spokeswoman for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said. His death was ruled accidental. Williams, 54, best known for his role as Omar Little on “The Wire,” was found dead in his Brooklyn penthouse on Sept. 6. “Having released this determination, (the office) will not comment further on the investigation,” spokeswoman Julie Bolcer said on Friday. The five-time Emmy nominee was discovered face down in the dining room of his luxury pad on Kent Avenue in Williamsburg with what appeared to be heroin on the kitc...

Anthony Fauci Warns of a Dark, Bad Winter if More Dont Get Vaccinated – Breitbart

Dr. Anthony Fauci warned this week that the U.S. could be in for a “dark, bad winter” if more people do not get vaccinated — an eerily similar sentiment he held last year. At the time, he said he was looking forward to Christmas in 2021. “You know, if we don’t get people vaccinated who need to be vaccinated, and we get that conflating with an influenza season, we could have a dark, bad winter,” the White House medical adviser said during an appearance on The Takeout podcast, although he previewed a potential way out. “We could also avoid a dark, bad winter if we get people vaccinated to a very high degree over the next several weeks to a month or two,” Fauci added. Last November, Fauci held a similar position, warning of a bleak winter and explaining that he planned to forgo ...

Methamphetamine-involved overdose deaths spike in US, study shows – Fox News

Methamphetamine-involved overdose deaths nearly tripled from 2015 to 2019 in the United States, according to a new National Institutes of Health (NIH) study. The deaths involving the stimulant sharply rose during that time among people ages 18 to 64, the NIH National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) reported. The agency said that patterns of methamphetamine use have become riskier and diversified across the nation's population. CONGRESSIONAL REPUBLICANS CRITICIZE WHITE HOUSE FOR NEW FENTANYL PROPOSAL THAT WOULD 'SHIELD DRUG TRAFFICKERS' While the number of people who reported using methamphetamine during this time did not increase as steeply, the analysis found that populations with methamphetamine use disorder have become more diverse.  In addition, the study – published in JAMA Psych...

IATSE Strike Wouldn’t Hit HBO, Showtime, BET & Starz Shows: “You Won’t Be A Scab”, Union Tells Members – Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: As tensions rise over a possible crippling IATSE strike against film and television production companies and an authorization vote looms, the union is making it crystal clear to members that not all productions would come to a stop if the picket lines go up. As talks stalled on a new contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, the below-the-line union explained in a comprehensive presentation to various locals this week that a strike wouldn’t hit premium cable, at least not right away. “If you are working on commercials or for HBO, Showtime, Starz, Cinemax, BET or another company that has a contract still in effect – you must keep working,” IATSE informed its members. “You will not be a scab!” Related Story AMPTP Responds...
