The Sopranos was inspired by this real-life Newark mob family – New York Post

In the late 1960s, the Newark, NJ, mob was in disarray. Its leader, Anthony “Tony Boy” Boiardo, suffered from crippling ulcers. His father, family capo Richie “The Boot” Boiardo, nearing 80, wanted to retire, care for his garden and lounge at his gargantuan pool. But he kept getting pulled back in to help his son, who was disliked by fellow gang members. At least two of them — soldiers Angelo “Gyp” DeCarlo and Anthony “Little Pussy” Russo — were caught on FBI wiretaps gossiping about the likelihood of Tony Boy getting killed by one of their own.  If this setup sounds familiar that’s because the Boiardo crime family inspired the HBO TV series “The Sopranos” and its new prequel movie “The Many Saints of Newark,” which drops in theaters and on HBO Max Oct. 1. The latter,...

What they're saying: "There is one scenario in which we have a double respiratory virus season each year," said former CDC Director Tom Frieden. "The striking thing is that certain things work really well for both of them, especially masks, but possibly ventilation and other measures," he added. The big picture: More than 100,000 people are still bei...

I dont have COVID: Doctor says some COVID patients deny virus, decry vaccines from their deathbed – USA TODAY

A Michigan doctor says some COVID-19 patients continue to deny their diagnosis or denounce vaccines from their deathbeds. Matthew Trunsky, a pulmonologist and director of the palliative care unit at a Beaumont Health hospital in southeastern Michigan, has gained national attention after recounting what some patents gravelly ill with coronavirus have told him. "You’re wrong doctor. I don't have COVID" and "I'd rather die than take the vaccine" were among the eight examples he shared in a Facebook post earlier in September.  Trunsky told The Washington Post medical staff have at times been berated by patients and their family members. He said over 100 of his patients have died from the coronavirus and 9 out of 10 COVID patients are unvaccinated.  CDC director OKs boosters for 'everyday:Fede...

Britney Spears Father Hired Surveillance That Captured Bedroom Audio: Documentary – HuffPost

Britney Spears’ father, Jamie Spears, hired a security company that monitored her digital communications and went so far as to secretly capture audio recordings from her bedroom, according to a New York Times documentary released Friday. The audio ― more than 180 hours’ worth ― allegedly recorded conversations the pop star had with her boyfriend and her children, said Alex Vlasov, a former employee of the company Black Box who spoke with the Times for its “New York Times Presents” series on Hulu. “Just because you’re in control, doesn’t give you the right to treat people like property,” Vlasov said in the hourlong program. “It didn’t feel like she was being treated like a human being.” At another point, he told the Times that it felt like the security team surrounding Britney Spears...

The Witcher season 3, new anime, kid spinoff announced by Netflix – Polygon

Netflix has all the attention in the world, but maybe not the IP to contend with the Disney and HBOs of the world. So it’s understandable the company would be pushing hard to expand their most promising franchises. Which is why we’re about to have a ton of Witcher in the immediate future. On Saturday, out of the Tudum fan event, Netflix announced a handful of new stories set in the Witchering World of Geralt of Rivia. The new animated project follows August’s anime-inspired feature The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf from Legend of Korra team Studio Mir. Netflix will also produce a new “fun filled” Witcher series for kids and families — though it’s not exactly clear how that’s going to work. Finally, Netflix also announced that The Witcher has been renewed for a third season. The ...

Masks are helping keep students safe from COVID, new studies say. Latest COVID-19 updates – Yahoo News

Mask mandates may have been a flash point in school districts across the nation as students went back to school late this summer, but studies keep showing the policies are helping prevent students from catching COVID-19. Two Centers for Disease Control and Prevention studies released Friday found outbreaks and pediatric cases were more common when schools didn't mandate masks. One study of about 1,000 schools in two Arizona counties says schools without mask mandates were 3.5 times more likely to have outbreaks than schools that started the year with a mask mandate. Another study of hundreds of U.S. counties found an increased rate of pediatric cases in areas where schools didn't have mask mandates. Authors cautioned that a number of variables could affect the analysis, but the findings f...
