Fran Drescher Elected President of SAG-AFTRA, Rival Joely Fisher Wins Secretary-Treasurer – Variety

Fran Drescher has been elected president of SAG-AFTRA, in a narrow victory for the faction that has led the union for a dozen years. Drescher defeated Matthew Modine, who ran on the rival Membership First slate, by a tally of 52.5% to 47.5%. Meanwhile, Joely Fisher — who was Modine’s running mate on the Membership First slate — won the race for secretary-treasurer, defeating Drescher’s running mate, Anthony Rapp, by a margin of 57.7% to 42.3%. Drescher will succeed Gabrielle Carteris, who has led the organization since 2016. Best known for her lead role on “The Nanny,” Drescher led the Unite for Strength slate, which has controlled the union since 2009 and is seen as the more moderate of the two factions that dominate the union’s internal politics. Telluride Awards Analysis: ‘King Richard’ Catapults Will Smith to Front of Best Actor Race, with Across-the-Board Recognition Possible – Hollywood Reporter

King Richard, a hugely tear-jerking and crowd-pleasing drama about how the father of tennis legends Venus Williams and Serena Williams set them on their path to greatness, wowed the Galaxy Theatre audience at its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on Thursday night. It strikes me as being bound for major awards recognition, first and foremost for lead actor Will Smith, who plays the eponymous Richard Williams, but quite possibly extending across-the-board and up to best picture (for which Smith, as a producer, is also eligible; the Williams sisters are executive producers). Many people know the broad outlines of the story: a working-class husband and father who loved tennis, but had little personal experience playing it, guided two of his five daughters ...

What We Do In The Shadows returns, with teeth – The A.V. Club

Photo: Russ Martin/FX Last we left What We Do In The Shadows’ core quartet of Nandor, Nadja, Laszlo, and Colin Robinson, they had just escaped a second, final death at the hands of the Vampiric Council. The only reason any of these immortal ding-dongs are still able to stalk Staten Island is because Guillermo de la Cruz, the great-great-great-whatever of world-famous vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing, swooped in at the last second to save their undead lives. So they must be grateful, right? And the Vampiric Council must be dead set* on finally bringing them to justice? Don’t be silly! As so often happens in real life, on What We Do In The Shadows good deeds go unrecognized and the most clueless and entitled among us fall upwards into positions of power. In other words—congratulations ...

With delta variant circulating, L.A. County will need more than 80% vaccinated to reach herd immunity – KTLA Los Angeles

With the highly contagious delta variant still predominant in Los Angeles County, public health officials say the region will no longer reach herd immunity against the coronavirus once 80% of eligible residents are vaccinated.   Initially, public health Director Barbara Ferrer projected L.A. County could get 80% of those eligible vaccinated and reach herd immunity by late July. But that was in May, and dependent on vaccinations keeping up at the same rate. The projected date was repeatedly pushed back as vaccinations lagged, and in June Ferrer said she didn’t expect the county could reach its goal before fall as the delta variant took hold in the region. Now, the delta variant accounts for 99% of all cases sequenced in the county, and researchers are still trying ...

‘RHOA’ star NeNe Leakes’ husband Gregg Leakes remembered as a beacon who brought cast together amid tension – Fox News

NeNe Leakes’ husband Gregg Leakes died from colon cancer on Wednesday at age 66 – and while he appeared regularly on the often contentious "Real Housewives of Atlanta," many among the reality circle revered the real estate investor as a beacon of objectivity. "I am heartbroken over the passing of Gregg Leakes, a wonderful man," Bravo TV executive producer, Andy Cohen wrote on Twitter following the news. "I jokingly called him 'Pastor Leakes' but in truth he was a strong voice of reason & commanded great respect among the entire #RHOA team. I am sending love and strength to @neneleakes & the entire Leakes family."  Gregg had actually married NeNe Leakes twice during his lifetime – first in 1997, and again in 2013 after a 2011 divorce. He began appearing on "Real Housewives of At...

Kate Walsh sets Grey’s Anatomy’ return for season 18 – Fox News

Kate Walsh — who made her "Grey’s Anatomy" debut as Dr. Addison Montgomery in the show’s Season 1 finale in 2005, and later was the star of spinoff "Private Practice" — will return to "Grey's" for a multi-episode arc in its upcoming 18th season.  Representatives from ABC confirmed Walsh’s return to the medical drama, but did not give specifics about Addison’s storyline. Walsh has said in the past that she’d be happy to return to the show.  Addison went from a recurring character to a series regular, and after the third season of "Grey’s Anatomy," Shonda Rhimes, the show’s creator, sent Addison to Los Angeles, where Walsh starred on "Private Practice." Addison shares a history with the characters who have been on "Grey’s" from the start, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), her formal rival for De...
