GALVESTON COUNTY – As COVID-19 cases are continuing to surge nationwide and in the state of Texas, Galveston County is reporting its youngest COVID-19 related death. Kali Cook, 4, died in her sleep shortly after testing positive for COVID-19, her family confirmed Thursday to KPRC, KSAT’s sister station. Karra Harwood, Kali’s mother, told KPRC that within a day of Kali’s positive test, she succumbed to the virus. “I just wanted everybody to know that it happened so fast,” Harwood said. “By 2 a.m. [Kali] started to run a fever. My mom came down and asked my fiancee if he could help her take some medicine. We gave her some medicine and by 7 a.m. she was gone.” Karra and other members of her family have also tested positive for COVID-19, shortly after Kali’s positive result. She also confirm...

EntertainmentYahoo Music Britney Spears's VMAs snake-wrangler looks back, 20 years later: 'It could have been really risky' By Lyndsey Parker Twenty years ago at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards, Britney Spears, at the peak of her performance powers, delivered one of the most electrifying and talked-about numbers in VMAs history. Showcasing a sultrier, more sophisticated sound on the Neptunes-produced “I’m a Slave 4 U,” she strutted onstage at New York City’s Metropolitan Opera House with a 7-foot albino Burmese python draped around her dainty shoulders, looking like the ultimate in-control snake-charmer. But that was just a testament to the pop star’s professionalism — because Spears was actually deathly terrified of her scaly co-star, according to that evening’s python-wrangler, Mike Han...

Refresh for latest…: The Venice Film Festival concludes this evening with prizes including the Golden Lion about to be handed out inside the Lido’s Sala Grande. For the second year in a row, the world’s oldest film festival proved it would not let the pandemic cancel a physical event, and organizers put on a selection that was roundly praised by critics and audiences alike. (Scroll below for the winners list which is being updated live.) There were a few hiccups along the way with longer than usual security lines causing some delegates to be delayed at press screenings, and the ticket reservations system was glitchy for many. But the movies themselves comprised another fine crop from artistic director Alberto Barbera and the selection committee — both in and out of compet...

Bruce Springsteen gave a heart-wrenching solo performance of 'I'll See You In My Dreams' at the 9/11 memorial in New York City Saturday, to mark the 20th anniversary of America's darkest day. Springsteen sang his 2020 song, while playing the acoustic guitar and harmonica, at the World Trade Center memorial plaza as part of the ceremony remembering the almost 3,000 people killed in the terrorist attacks on September 11 2001.  The New Jersey native, 71, introduced the song, saying: 'God bless our fallen brothers and sisters, and their families, their friends and their loved ones.'  He then broke into a moving rendition of the song, which includes the emotional lyrics: 'For death is not the end, And I'll see you in my dreams.'  Bruce Springsteen gave a heart-wrenching so...

Parents Find Ways to Get Their Youngest Children Covid Vaccines – The New York Times

Leng Vong Reiff had just received her second dose of a Covid vaccine and thought guiltily of her two young, unvaccinated sons. So she began banging away at her keyboard. Like countless parents across the nation, she was searching for vaccine clinical trials for children. She managed to find one, applied and got a call back. “They said that a clinic in Nebraska had an opening right now, four hours away,” she recalled. Better yet, this was a placebo-free trial, so she knew her sons would be given the bona fide vaccine. A resident of Clive, Iowa, Ms. Vong Reiff bundled Logan, 9, and Quentin, 5, into her car and raced west on Interstate 80 to the clinic, where her sons received their first shots of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. They returned three weeks later for their second shots, prote...

METALLICA appeared on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" last night (Friday, September 10) to promote the 30th-anniversary box set edition of the band's self-titled LP, better known as "The Black Album." The band performed two songs, sat down for an interview and took part in a "Celebrities Read Mean Tweets"-style segment where the four members of the group read one-star Amazon reviews of the classic 1991 album. "This is by far one of the most loathsome crimes ever committed against music," drummer Lars Ulrich read. Guitarist Kirk Hammett continued: "Face it people, this album $ucks. Anybody who thinks this horrible, atrocious, self titled ‘$uck-o-rama’ CD is worth four or five stars must be braindead from smoking crack." Frontman James Hetfield added: "This album sucks, sad but true! I bought th...

Why dont poisonous animals die from their own toxins? – Livescience.com

Some of the most poisonous animals in the world are small, colorful frogs called poison dart frogs, in the family Dendrobatidae, which live in the rainforests of Central and South America. A single frog carries enough poison to kill 10 adult humans. Interestingly, these frogs aren't born poisonous — they acquire their poisonous chemical by eating insects and other arthropods.  But if this poison is so deadly, why do the frogs themselves not die when they ingest it? These frogs' ability to avoid autointoxication has puzzled scientists for a long time, said Fayal Abderemane-Ali, a researcher at the University of California San Francisco's Cardiovascular Research Institute, and the lead author of a new study in the Journal of General Physiology that explores this phenomenon.  Related:...
