‘Law & Order’ Revived for Season 21 at NBC – Hollywood Reporter

It’s official: Dick Wolf’s original Law & Order series is returning to NBC. The network has handed out a straight-to-series order for a revival of the procedural that launched Wolf’s multibillion-dollar franchise. Rick Eid, one of Wolf’s frequent collaborators, will serve as showrunner on what is being billed as the drama’s 21st season. “There are very few things in life that are literally dreams come true,” said Wolf, who remains credited as L&O’s creator and executive producer. “This is mine.” An episode count has not yet been determined and it’s unclear if the new L&O will make it to air during the recently started 2021-22 broadcast season or if it will instead be earmarked for 2022-23. Sources tell THR that some former L&O castmembers are e...

Netflix scoops up Oxenfree developer Night School – The Verge

Netflix is continuing its push into video games with the acquisition of Night School Studio, the team best-known for 2016’s Oxenfree and 2019’s Afterparty. (Oxenfree, it should be noted, had strong Stranger Things vibes — and Night School also previously worked on a canceled Stranger Things title.) “Night School wants to stretch our narrative and design aspirations across distinctive, original games with heart,” Night School’s Sean Krankel said in a statement. “Netflix gives film, TV, and now game makers an unprecedented canvas to create and deliver excellent entertainment to millions of people. Our explorations in narrative gameplay and Netflix’s track record of supporting diverse storytellers was such a natural pairing. It felt like both teams came to this conclusion instinctively...

Black Women Around R. Kellys Trial React to His Conviction – The New York Times

The woman was taking a nap when her phone began buzzing — and buzzing, and buzzing: A verdict had been reached in the trial of R. Kelly, one of the biggest names in R&B music. Two weeks earlier, the woman had testified under a pseudonym — Angela — at Mr. Kelly’s trial, telling jurors that the singer began sexually abusing her when she was underage. Her accusations were not part of the charges of which Mr. Kelly was convicted. But 30 years after Mr. Kelly began abusing her, her testimony helped convict him. “When I heard guilty, I immediately burst into tears,” she said. “I cried for quite a while.” She said she had watched the stories of other women who looked like her be brushed aside before. “Black women are overlooked so often because people say, ‘Well, you dress this way, look t...

Oregon’s COVID-19 surge receded. Will those declines continue? – OregonLive

A news conference meant to sum up the current state of the COVID-19 crisis in Oregon started out with a decidedly upbeat tone Tuesday -- with Gov. Kate Brown saying she had “promising news” about declining numbers of patients hospitalized and new daily infections identified. “The good news is that while we still have a long way to go, it appears things are slowly getting better,” Brown said. Deputy state epidemiologist Dr. Tom Jeanne also chimed in that while hospitalizations are still stressing the system’s capacity, they are declining thanks to Oregonians heeding COVID-19 safety precautions, like wearing masks. “Thank you Oregonians for once again unselfishly stepping up to turn back the rising tide of infection,” Jeanne said. But by news conference’s end, both the governor and th...

Lake County man dies from rabies; first human case in Illinois since 1954 – WGN TV Chicago

LAKE COUNTY, Ill. — An elderly north suburban man has died from rabies — the first human case in Illinois since 1954. In mid-August, a Lake County man in his 80s woke up with a bat on his neck. The species was collected and subsequently tested positive for rabies. Health officials urged the man to start post-exposure rabies treatment, due the its high mortality rate, but the man declined. One month later, officials said the man began experiencing symptoms consistent with rabies — including neck pain, headache, difficulty controlling his arms, finger numbness and difficulty speaking. The rabies virus infects the central nervous system, ultimately causing disease in the brain and death. Without preventive treatment, rabies is typically fatal. “Rabies has t...

Ozy CEO Carlos Watson Steps Down as Host of Documentary Emmy Awards Following Controversial Report – Variety

Ozy Media CEO Carlos Watson has informed the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences that he will no longer host the documentary portion of the 42nd News & Documentary Emmy Awards on Wednesday night. Watson’s decision to step down comes following a New York Times report on Monday questioning the validity of Ozy’s various traffic claims, and revealing that Ozy co-founder Samir Rao had posed as a YouTube executive, touting Ozy’s success, during a conference call with Goldman Sachs bankers in February. “Carlos Watson has graciously reached out to us and asked to be removed from his hosting duties tomorrow night so as not to distract the focus from the talented nominees in the documentary categories of the 42nd News & Documentary Emmy Awards,” NATAS said in a stat...
