An eighth-grade girl died this morning in Raleigh, Miss., mere hours after testing positive for COVID-19. Multiple sources told the Mississippi Free Press that the student attended classes at the school most of the week, including Wednesday, before testing positive for COVID-19 at week’s end. Her health quickly declined afterward. Classes began in the Smith County School District, where she attended school, on Aug. 6. Unlike last year when Gov. Tate Reeves mandated masks in all public schools, the district decided in June that it would “allow” students and educators to bring face masks to school but would not require them. Josephine County, Ore. -- On Saturday, Josephine County Public Health Officials announced that two more people have died from coronavirus, with one of the victims being fully vaccinated. The 47-year-old woman was diagnosed on August 9th and died the following day at Asante Three Rivers Medical Center in Grants Pass. Two weeks ago at this time, just two counties in New York State -- Nassau and Suffolk -- were rated as having "high" COVID-19 transmission levels, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Now, the number is 33 amid an outbreak of cases connected to the highly contagious Delta variant. The CDC announced late in July that people should return to wearing masks indoors in areas with “substantial” and “high” COVID-19 transmission. That means masks should now be worn in a total of 54 counties. With a total of 62 counties, only eight have "moderate" spread. More than 1,900 children are hospitalised for coronavirus across the US, which is being hit hard by the Delta variant. The number of children hospitalised with COVID-19 has hit a record-high in the United States, which continues to grapple with the rapid spread of the highly contagious Delta variant, especially in areas with low vaccination rates. Paediatric hospitalisations hit 1,902 on Saturday, according to data from the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) – accounting for about 2.4 percent of the country’s total coronavirus-related hospitalisations.
