‘Hotel Transylvania 4’ Skipping Theaters as Sony Nears Over $100 Million Deal With Amazon (EXCLUSIVE) – Variety

Sony Pictures Animation and Amazon are nearing deal for over $100 million for the animated feature “Hotel Transylvania: Transformania” to stream globally on Amazon Prime Video, Variety has learned exclusively. “Hotel Transylvania” has been a monster family franchise for Sony, with the first three films grossing more than $1.3 billion in theaters worldwide since 2012. But the surge in COVID cases — driven by the highly contagious delta variant predominantly infecting unvaccinated people — has made theatrical exhibition of family pics untenable since there is no vaccine yet for children under 12. With New York City enacting a vaccine mandate for indoor venues on Tuesday, and other major cities seriously considering their own, sources say that in early August, Sony began exploring ...

A gay man wonders: Are condoms bygone? – Queerty

via ShutterstockA gay man has appealed to Slate sex columnist How To Do It with an unusual question: do gay men not use condoms anymore? “What is it with queer guys insisting on never wearing a condom anymore?” the writer, identified only as Wrap It Up writes. “My Grindr message log is full of guys who ghosted or blocked after learning I wouldn’t bareback. They’re on PrEP, they say. What I don’t say is the last time I was cavalier about condoms, I ended up with herpes. Do these guys not remember the HIV crisis (still very much a thing)? Other STIs? Is the Venn diagram of anti-maskers and anti-rubbers a circle?” How To Do It first offers a few observations before addressing the issue of sexual health. Immunocompromised New Yorkers Now Eligible For Third COVID-19 Vaccine Shots – Gothamist

Immunocompromised New Yorkers can officially seek a third dose of COVID-19 vaccine. Federal regulators approved the policy change late last week, following a string of studies and public health reports that showed the vaccine response wanes in immunocompromised groups but that they can be reinforced with an additional shot. The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene released an advisory over the weekend saying the policy change would take effect Monday. New Jersey’s Health Commissioner opted to follow the new guidance immediately following the authorization last Friday. New York State Department of Health announced Monday morning that it was also following suit. The booster shots are only authorized for people who originally took the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, not Johnso...

All Counties in Illinois Except 1 Seeing ‘Substantial or ‘High COVID Transmission and Should Mask Indoors, CDC Says – NBC Chicago

Every county in Illinois except one is seeing "substantial" or "high" community transmission of COVID-19, placing nearly the entire state in the category in which everyone over the age of 2 should resume wearing a mask indoors, regardless of vaccination status, federal health officials say. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its guidance late last month to recommend that fully vaccinated people wear masks in indoor settings again in areas of the U.S. that are seeing "substantial" or "high" transmission of COVID-19. The new guidance marked a reversal from earlier recommendations that said fully vaccinated people could remove masks in most settings. So in which areas is the CDC advising people wear masks indoors? The agency points to its COVID...

Barbra Streisand Took Another Look And Shaded Lady Gagas A Star Is Born – HuffPost

Sounds like Barbra Streisand thought the most recent remake of “A Star Is Born,” starring Lady Gaga was little, well, sha-ha-sha-ha-llow. The music legend, who took on the role of the young ingenue in the 1976 version of the film, offered up her candid and then some thoughts about Bradley Cooper’s Oscar-winning feature debut, which she previously lavished praise upon. While promoting the release of her new album, “Release Me 2,” on Australian talk show “The Project” over the weekend, Streisand appeared to knock the 2018 film for its lack of originality. “At first, when I heard it was going to be done again, it was supposed to be Will Smith and Beyoncé. I thought, that’s interesting. Really make it different again, different kind of music, integrated actors, I thought that was a gr...

‘Field Of Dreams’ Series From Mike Schur Based On Movie Ordered By Peacock – Deadline

Peacock has given a straight-to-series order to Field of Dreams, based on Universal’s Oscar-nominated film, from The Good Place creator Michael Schur, the film’s producer Lawrence Gordon and Universal TV. Written by Schur, the series will reimagine the mixture of family, baseball, Iowa and magic that makes the movie so enduring and beloved. The pickup comes amid a surge in popularity for the 1989 film starring Kevin Costner following baseball’s Field of Dreams game last week between the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox, which aired in primetime on Fox. It was the most-watched regular-season Major League Baseball telecast on any network since 2005, according to Nielsen, and Fox’s most-streamed regular-season game in its history. Go read this deep dive on why US public health data systems couldn’t handle COVID-19 – The Verge

Public health data systems in the United States are out of date, underfunded, and can’t communicate with each other. Those issues left states unable to keep track of COVID-19 spread, and during surges, many local health departments stopped contact tracing, according to a new investigation from Politico. The deep-dive look at the gaps in public health surveillance shows breakdowns at nearly every step in the process. Labs that ran COVID-19 tests didn’t report data directly to health departments through electronic systems, instead using faxes or emails. Health departments used different systems to track different types of outbreaks and relied on programs that required laborious, manual entry. They couldn’t get information about cases through the system in time to intervene in outbre...

In a phase one trial, a booster dose of the vaccine generated "significantly higher neutralizing antibodies" against the original coronavirus strain as well as the beta and delta variants, the companies said in a press release.
