New Zealand wages high-stakes effort to halt virus outbreak – Fox News

WELLINGTON, New Zealand – By early next week, New Zealanders should know if their government's strict new lockdown is working to stamp out its first coronavirus outbreak in six months. A successful effort could again make the nation's virus response the envy of the world. A failure could expose flaws in its health system, including a shortage of hospital beds and a slow vaccine rollout. The high-stakes campaign hinges on whether new infections, which have risen for the past 10 days, begin to drop. Last week, the government put the nation into the full lockdown after only a single community case was detected in the city of Auckland. GULF COAST TOURIST BEACHES TURN INTO CORONAVIRUS HOTSPOTS "It’s counterintuitive," said epidemiologist Michael Baker. "When there’s a threat, you usually...

Model predicts 100,000 more COVID deaths unless U.S. changes its ways – CBS News

The U.S. is projected to see nearly 100,000 more COVID-19 deaths between now and December 1, according to the nation's most closely watched forecasting model. But health experts say that toll could be cut in half if nearly everyone wore a mask in public spaces. In other words, what the coronavirus has in store this fall depends on human behavior. "Behavior is really going to determine if, when and how sustainably the current wave subsides," said Lauren Ancel Meyers, director of the University of Texas COVID-19 Modeling Consortium. "We cannot stop Delta in its tracks, but we can change our behavior overnight." That means doubling down again on masks, limiting social gatherings, staying home when sick and getting vaccinated. "Those things are within our control," Meyers said. The U....

Ted Lasso Season 2 Isnt In A Slump, Its Headed For A Breakdown – GameSpot

In Ted Lasso Season 2 Episode 5, "Rainbow," the eponymous coach tries to cheer up the losing AFC Richmond team by describing the philosophy of "Rom-communism." You have to trust, Ted tells his squad, that things will work out, like they always do in romantic comedies--maybe not the way you want, maybe not the way you expect, but they will, in fact, work out. At the time, it struck me as a weird thing for the coach of a losing soccer club to tell his struggling team. I get what Ted was going for--it's a philosophy of avoiding frustration and hopelessness about things outside of your control, and trusting that this, too, shall pass. For a guy whose big central tenet is "Believe," outwardly, it's an idea that tracks. But something about the whole speech felt wrong, somehow....

KATE MIDDLETON REVEALS PRINCE GEORGE’S ADORABLE NICKNAME FOR WILLIAM Prince George has come up with an adorable nickname for his dad. And we’re not exaggerating when we say it sounds like something straight out of an Enid Blyton book. In 2018, Kate Middleton was chatting to fans at Leicester City Football Club when she let the nickname slip. When royal fan Fiona Sturgess asked about the couple’s three children, Kate reportedly said: “They are great, thank you.” Fiona told People at the time: “Kate said that William was playing football with the children last night. “One of them said, I think it was George, ‘Are you playing football tomorrow, Pops?’” What’s more, it has also been claimed the couple lovingly use the nickname PG for their eldest son – after his initials. It was more of an introduction than a proper single, and she’s already back with another star-crossed track that scratches that itch: “justified.” (more…)
