Covid-19 infections of vaccinated people are expected. But the unvaccinated are the big highway of transmission, experts say – CNN

The severity of the illness — not the number of people who contract the virus — is a crucial concept for people to understand at this point in the pandemic, said Dr. Rochelle Walensky, who heads the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "I think we all have to recognize that with 164 million people who are vaccinated, we should expect tens of thousands, perhaps, of breakthrough infections," Walensky told CNN's Wolf Blitzer on Thursday. "Those breakthrough infections have mild illness. They are staying out of the hospital. They are not dying, and I think that that's the most important thing to understand," Walensky added. As the Delta variant of the coronavirus rips through the US, it is especially devastating regions with low vaccination rates as experts and government offi...

Central Texas largest county changes COVID-19 threat level; 18 city workers are quarantining – KWTX

(KWTX) – The Bell County Public Health District Thursday changed its COVID-19 threat level to severe uncontrolled community transmission and Killeen is bracing for a new wave of cases after 18 of its employees were quarantined after either testing positive for the virus or having close exposure to someone who has it. Most of those who are hospitalized in the county are younger than 55 and virtually all are unvaccinated, the health district said. “We continue to encourage Bell County residents to get vaccinated and to protect themselves by wearing a mask until fully vaccinated. The vaccines provide a layer of protection which can prevent or reduce the severity of Covid-19, including death.” interim Health District Director Nikki Morrow said. The quarantined City of Killeen employees includ...

The Weeknd Shares Video for New Song “Take My Breath” – Pitchfork

As teased, the Weeknd has released his new single “Take My Breath.” The track arrives with a music video directed by Cliqua. The visual has intense strobe lighting and was set to show in Imax theaters this week prior to screenings of Suicide Squad, but was pulled due to concerns over potential seizures. In the clip, the Weeknd visits a futuristic nightclub, where he literally takes breaths from an oxygen tank. He also gets strangled by a woman’s long braid. “Take My Breath” is the Weeknd’s first solo single since After Hours. The musician’s After Hours era was extensive, beginning way back in November 2019 with “Heartless” and “Blinding Lights.” The era featured many music videos—with the Weeknd in various states of disarray—and a halftime performance at Super Bowl LV. In a new interview ...

Kanye Wests much-improved Donda featuring The Weeknd, Jay-Z impressed in Atlanta stadium – USA TODAY

ATLANTA – Exactly two weeks ago, Kanye West played his long-awaited “Donda” album for about 42,000 fans in Mercedes-Benz Stadium. And then he literally never left the building. The superstar rapper – a genius to his devotees, an eccentric to everyone else – created a studio lair in a pocket of the cavernous downtown Atlanta venue where he slept in a makeshift spartan bedroom, ate meals from a privately commissioned chef, toiled away on “Donda,” livestreamed elements of his temporary (?) life and welcomed guests including Chance the Rapper. On Thursday night, West emerged from his stadium cocoon for another live album presentation for a slightly smaller crowd of about 35,000. UNMC doctor shows difference between COVID-19′s Delta variant in vaccinated, unvaccinated people – 1011now

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Doctors and the CDC report that the Delta variant of COVID-19 spreads as easily as chickenpox, but what exactly does that look like when it’s transmitted from person to person? Dr. James Lawler sees patients at Nebraska Medicine on a daily basis. He explained in simple terms, if someone is infected with the COVID-19 Delta variant, it attaches to cells in our respiratory system, lining our airways and our lungs. Dr. Lawler said the variant then “hijacks” the cell, causing it to spread to others quickly. “What happens is it releases its RNA,” Dr. Lawler said while in front of a big screen of 3-D animations. “The cell then uses its ribosome to turn that RNA into virus protein.” He went on to explain how these steps lead to infection, “The virus is essentially hijacking...

Tampa Bay doctor weighs in on delta plus variant and if you should be concerned – WFLA

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — There’s growing concern surrounding the coronavirus delta variant, and now, there are reports about a delta plus variant. The delta plus variant is similar to the existing delta variant except that it has a spike protein mutation called the K417N. Spike proteins are external bumps the virus uses to hook onto human cells. The delta plus mutation is the same one previously identified on the beta variant. Dr. John Greene at Moffitt Cancer Center says the delta variant is trying to mutate as it passes through people, and as it’s trying to mutate, it’ll occasionally produce a strain potentially more contagious than itself known as delta plus. COVID-19 breakthrough cases: Is one vaccine better than the others? “We have constant virus evol...

In the last 24 hours, health officials reported 9,500 cases, 8,500 on Tuesday, 7,300 Wednesday, more than 33,000 over the weekend, and 10,000 last Thursday. That breaks down to nearly 10,000 new cases per day. A new sub-strain of the delta variant has been detected here in the Bay Area. It’s called delta plus and officials say it’s the most contagious variant we’ve seen. What is the delta plus variant? “So what you see is like bad stuff just getting worse because they’re mutating,” Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, UCSF infectious disease specialist, said.  The delta variant is the most contagious coronavirus mutant so far in the pandemic and ...
