In the American Journal of Industrial Medicine, researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai grouped 1,788 responders based on the time they arrived at the scene of the terrorist attack. They analyzed CT scans for signs of hepatic steatosis, also known as fatty liver disease, which can cause scarring in the liver, cancer or liver failure. 28,000-year-old lion cub looks like its just sleeping – CNN

CNN —   We are driven by discovery. As a kid, I devoured stories about the arduous efforts to reveal the past (and I still do). There were divers seeking shipwrecks, astronomers peering through telescopes at the universe, researchers digging for fossils, and historians looking through pages and paintings to find lost masterpieces. Their findings were enthralling, but the experiences of these explorers – the journeys to reach their breakthroughs – were equally insightful. Reading their words, I could feel the salt air on my face, the sun on my back, the dust on my hands – and the weight of what it took to gain this knowledge. As we enjoy the endlessly fascinating bounty shared by re...

Texas Baby Sick With COVID Had To Be Airlifted 150 Miles To Available Hospital Bed – HuffPost

An 11-month-old baby girl suffering from COVID-19 had to be airlifted from Houston to an available hospital bed 150 miles away, amid a crushing shortage of resources as delta-variant coronavirus cases skyrocket in Texas. “She needed to be intubated immediately because she was having seizures,” Patricia Darnauer, the administrator for Houston’s Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital, told ABC-6 TV. “We looked at all five major pediatric hospital groups” in Houston and “none” had appropriate beds available, she said. Harris Health System, which includes LBJ Hospital, shared videos and photos of the baby being wheeled to an air ambulance. She’s receiving treatment at Baylor Scott & White McLane Children’s Medical Center in Temple. Harris president and CEO Esmaeil Porsa said Wednesday that th...

COVID hospitalizations are rising faster in Oregon than ever before. No one is sounding the alarm – OregonLive

The number of Oregonians hospitalized with COVID-19 has skyrocketed over the past month, rising faster than in previous waves and almost entirely among the unvaccinated. Hospital leaders say COVID-positive patients requiring hospitalization are younger on average than ever before. With a quicker onset of symptoms, patients are more ill when admitted to hospitals and rapidly declining in health compared to previous surges. On Friday, the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 reached 496, including a record 135 in intensive care. At the current trajectory, Oregon is on pace to exceed its all-time high of 584 COVID-positive patients as soon as next week. But hospital leaders and Gov. Kate Brown have not sounded the alarm, as they did during earlier waves. Brown warned in June 2020...

Some in US getting COVID-19 boosters without FDA approval – Associated Press

DENVER (AP) — When the delta variant started spreading, Gina Welch decided not to take any chances: She got a third, booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by going to a clinic and telling them it was her first shot. The U.S. government has not approved booster shots against the virus, saying it has yet to see evidence they are necessary. But Welch and an untold number of other Americans have managed to get them by taking advantage of the nation’s vaccine surplus and loose tracking of those who have been fully vaccinated. Welch, a graduate student from Maine who is studying chemical engineering, said she has kept tabs on scientific studies about COVID-19 and follows several virologists and epidemiologists on social media who have advocated for boosters. “I’m going to follow these experts ...
