Guinea confirms West Africas first case of rare, Ebola-like Marburg virus disease – CNN

Samples of the virus, which causes hemorrhagic fever, were taken from the patient in Gueckedou. The statement added that the detection comes less than two months after Guinea declared an end to its most recent Ebola outbreak. "Gueckedou, where Marburg has been confirmed, is also the same region where cases of the 2021 Ebola outbreak in Guinea as well as the 2014--2016 West Africa outbreak were initially detected," according to the WHO statement. "Samples taken from a now-deceased patient and tested by a field laboratory in Gueckedou as well as Guinea's national haemorrhagic fever laboratory turned out positive for the Marburg virus. These 49 counties in New York state should wear masks indoors, CDC now says (see list) – syracuse.com

St. Lawrence County and Chautauqua County have been added to the list of counties in New York state that should return to wearing masks indoors, according to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance on Covid-19. The CDC says people should wear masks indoors in areas with “substantial” (orange areas on map above) and “high” (red) transmission of Covid-19, even if vaccinated against the coronavirus. That includes places with at least 50 new cases per 100,000 people in the past week, or 90% of U.S. counties — including 49 of New York’s 62 counties now. Cattaraugus County was previously on the list for substantial transmission, but now is listed as “moderate.” St. Lawrence and Chautauqua were added as “substantial” areas Monday night, while Herkimer County has moved from “s...

Lyft driver busted for attack on country singer Clare Dunn – New York Post

Country singer Clare Dunn has tearfully revealed how a rideshare driver yanked her from the car and violently threw her face-first into the ground — with the driver busted early Tuesday, online records show. “This has been hell,” the “Get Out” singer tearfully told People magazine, sharing a photo of her bloodied and bruised face from the June 26 attack in Tennessee. The Colorado-based star had been recording in Nashville when she and a friend shared a Lyft home from a girls’ night out, with the pal dropped off first, Dunn said. The driver then got increasingly agitated as the 34-year-old singer asked him to take a slower route avoiding highways, and then pointed out that he had missed her turn, she recalled to People. “He was screaming at me,” Dunn...

I Am Legend Screenwriter Forced to Tell Anti-Vaxxers His Zombie Movie Is Fake – Gizmodo

Image: I Am Legend (2007) The screenwriter who penned the 2007 zombie movie I Am Legend starring Will Smith has been forced to clarify something on Twitter that’s sure to make us all depressed today. The writer, Akiva Goldsman, had to explain that I Am Legend is, in fact, fiction. It’s not a documentary about zombies or something like that. “Oh. My. God. It’s a movie. I made that up. It’s. Not. Real,” Goldsman tweeted Monday night. Why on Earth would Goldsman feel the need to clarify something so obvious? It would appear that anti-vaccination advocates who are campaigning against covid-19 vaccines have turned I Am Legend into a meme. The meme incorrectly asserts that zombies were created in the movie from a vaccination program gone awry, as though that would have some relevance to...

Yayoi Kusama’s Pumpkin Sculpture in Japan Is Damaged by Typhoon – The New York Times

A typhoon packing winds as high as 78 miles per hour swept away a yellow, polka-dot pumpkin sculpture by the artist Yayoi Kusama from its perch on the tip of the Japanese island of Naoshima on Monday. The highly recognizable artwork and tourist attraction suffered unspecified damage from the storm and was recovered, the Benesse Art Site, where the pumpkin was exhibited, said on Twitter. It was not immediately known when the artwork would be displayed again. A video circulating on social media showed violent waves thrashing the pumpkin about like an enormous and beautiful seashell, revealing its hollow innards. The pumpkin, which is about 6 feet 7 inches tall and 8 feet 4 inches wide, was installed in 1994 on Naoshima, an island known largely for its art museums. The sculpture has l...
