Quentin Tarantino’s Star Trek had the one thing all fans want: “awesome gangster scenes” – The A.V. Club

There was a lot of hype a few years ago about Quentin Tarantino writing a Star Trek movie. Though, it stands to reason that the people most excited by a Star Trek in which Kirk says “mother fucker” probably weren’t Star Trek diehards. Nevertheless, this happens with almost any of Tarantino’s offhand remarks. In the past, he’s also expressed interest in directing a Friday The 13th, which, honestly, sounds more his speed, what with the violence, sex, and cursing. Unfortunately, the 10-film career trajectory he’s married to got in the way of jumping into the I.P.-heavy galaxy of franchise filmmaking. Still, the world of entertainment will always have a soft spot for one of our most celebrated auteurs taking a crack at someone else’s property. Speaking to TotalFilm’s Bulletproof Scree...

A new Batman comic confirms that sidekick Robin is queer – CNN

Tim Drake, one of several characters to have taken up Robin's mantle in the comics, accepts a date with a male friend in the new issue of "Batman: Urban Legends," a series that debuted earlier this year. The issue's final page sees Drake visit his friend Bernard at his home after the two shared a moment of unexpected connection (and Drake, as his alter ego Robin, must rescue Bernard from a villain). In the last panel, Drake tells Bernard, beaming, "Yeah ... yeah, I think I want that" after Bernard asks him out. "[The issue] happened because this is who Tim is," comic writer Meghan Fitzmartin said in an interview with Polygon. "I love this character very much, and as I went back to reread as much as I could to do Robin justice, it became clear this is the story Tim needed to tell." ...

Jennifer Hudson Knew Aretha Franklin. To Play Her, She Had to Learn More. – The New York Times

Jennifer Hudson had plenty of time to think about how to portray Aretha Franklin onscreen. In 2007, soon after Hudson won the Academy Award for best supporting actress — for playing a girl-group singer in “Dreamgirls” — Franklin told Hudson she should play her in a biopic, starting a decade-long friendship filled with weekly conversations. Like Franklin, Hudson grew up singing in church, and she has poured gospel virtuosity into pop songs. And like Franklin, whose mother died at 34 of a heart attack, Hudson experienced sudden, devastating loss: her mother, brother and nephew were murdered in Chicago in 2008. In her career, Hudson has repeatedly paid tribute to Franklin, from using a Franklin song for her “American Idol” audition in 2004 to singing “Amazing Grace” at Franklin’s funeral i...

Los Angeles County Working On Plan For Proof Of Vaccination Requirement In Indoor Public Spaces – Deadline

On Tuesday, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors ordered plans be drafted that would require proof of vaccination to enter many public spaces. The motion was just to make a plan for such a measure, not to actually implement one. Supervisor Janice Hahn called for the proof of vaccination evaluation “to correct course on what we see as the Delta variant gone wild.” She noted that just about 4 million of the county’s 10 million residents remain unvaccinated.” Hahn’s proposal called on health officers and other county leaders to analyze vaccine requirements for public spaces in other regions, especially New York’s, which she said “shows promising results and may build a case for implementing similar mandates in other cities.” She called on public health and other county offi...
