NXT recap & reactions: Prelude to the Undisputed Finale – Cageside Seats

Let’s acknowledge the elephant in the room before we get into the proceedings this evening: these are weird times for the NXT faithful. We don’t know what’s truly happening with the black and gold brand, nor can we discern fact from very plausible fiction. With that said, it feels obvious that change is in the air so let’s enjoy what NXT is for as long as it is until the day it morphs into something else. Cool? Cool. Undisputed Part III: The Third One There are movies heavy on story and light on plot. Mad Max: Fury Road comes to mind as its fairly simple plot houses a lot of story. NXT’s latest installment was a lot like that with the Kyle O’Reilly and Adam Cole’s beef serving as the centerpiece. Keeping it all the way real, “face-offs” in wrestling normally elicit a big le si...

Study showing antibody levels protecting against COVID-19 could speed creation of new vaccines, boosters – USA TODAY

Eagerly anticipated new research pinpoints antibodies scientists can test for to see if a COVID-19 vaccine is effective. These "correlates of protection" could speed the development of new vaccines or boosters without requiring the enormous clinical trials used to create the first COVID-19 vaccines.  Instead, researchers could vaccinate people with a new vaccine or booster, measure their antibodies over the course of several months, and know if it worked.  This is "the Holy Grail" in terms of vaccines, and one that hasn't yet been set for the virus that causes COVID-19, said Peter Gilbert, co-author of the study posted Tuesday to medRxiv, a preprint site where scientific articles can be published prior to being accepted by peer-reviewed journals.  "The hope is that the Food and Drug Admin...

Local hospitals straining under stress of Delta COVID surge – KFSN-TV

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Statistics from the state of California show there are just 42 ICU beds available in the six counties of the Central Valley - 10 in Fresno, 19 in Tulare, one in Kings, five in Merced, seven in Madera, and none in Mariposa. Hospitals are going back into surge protocols, creating new beds and ICU beds for COVID patients. Doctors say they're better prepared now, but they're noticing some big differences in the surge of patients they're treating now. Alarm bells are going off at Fresno County hospitals. July started with only about 50 hospitalized COVID patients, eight of them in ICU beds. But as the delta variant became more prevalent, case counts rose, and the system has started to feel the stress. As of Tuesday, there are 236 in the hospital and 49 in ICU, and the...

Jason Isbells Show At Houstons Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Is Cancelled – Stereogum

Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit are requiring proof that you’re fully vaccinated against COVID-19, or have tested negative for the virus within the past three days, in order to enter their current run of concerts. The policy has caused friction with at least one other artist, Marc Broussard, and landed Isbell on MSNBC to explain his position. (“I’m all for freedom, but if you’re dead, you don’t have any freedoms at all.”) Now Isbell has cancelled Wednesday’s scheduled show with Lucinda Williams at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in Houston because the venue will not institute his vaccine policy. Heres everything we know about 2021 Emmy Awards – The A.V. Club

From left: The Mandalorian, Ted Lasso, I May Destroy YouPhoto: Disney; Apple; Natalie Seery/HBO If you thought that the Academy Awards would be the standard-bearer for award shows in the future, you’d be wrong. Dead wrong. Well, maybe not that serious, but the Emmys will not be doing the old Steven Soderbergh route and setting the ceremony in a train station. We also assume the award for Best Actor won’t be the show’s finale, and you can pretty much guarantee Anthony Hopkins won’t be winning—unless he’s nominated for those delightful Instagram posts, which he isn’t. This year, it sounds like the Emmys won’t doing the whole Zoom-based ceremony, so don’t expect to see Jason Sudekis in a hoodie like the Golden Globes. Instead, they’re moving the ceremony outside, keeping a tight lid on...
