Over 1 Million People Have Gotten Unauthorized Covid-19 Booster Shots: Report – Gizmodo

Photo: Gustavo Garello (AP) A CDC briefing document seen by ABC News estimates that at least a million people have received covid-19 booster shots. The number may be higher, since the document reportedly does not account for people who’ve received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The document is not publicly available, and in an email to Gizmodo, a CDC spokesperson said that the agency does “not comment on leaked information.” Currently, a person in the U.S. is considered fully vaccinated after one dose of a Johnson & Johnson covid-19 vaccine or two doses of a Pfizer or Moderna vaccine. But some people have been getting additional doses, either on the advice of their doctor or simply by deciding on their own: Last month, Camille Kotton, a member of the CDC’s Advisory Committee o...

A scientist who came out of retirement to help fight covid loses his own battle – The Washington Post

“There are some people who, when they pass on, make us feel the overall intelligence and kindness in the world is remarkably less without them,” said CrisiScience member Alexander F. More, an associate professor of environmental health at Long Island University. “Tom was one of those people. The world and we are less without him, and I’m terribly saddened by the loss. Still, I’m grateful for whatever little time I was allowed to learn from him.”

Jason Isbell calls out reporter over conflict of interest after cancelling Houston-area concert – Chron

Jason Isbell will not be playing at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on Wednesday. The country star canceled his Houston-area show with the 400 Unit band after what appears to be a conflict with the venue over COVID-19 safety protocols.  Isbell's record label, Southeastern Records, tweeted a statement confirming the cancellations Tuesday evening, stating the venue would not comply with the artists' updated safety precautions asking venues to require proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test for entry. Tomorrow's @JasonIsbell and the 400 Unit show at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in Houston, TX is CANCELLED. Unfortunately, the venue was not willing to comply with the band's updated Health and Safety standards. (1/2)— Southeastern Records (@South...

Sotheby’s to Auction 11 Picasso Paintings With Links to Steve Wynn at the Bellagio – The Wall Street Journal

LAS VEGAS— MGM Resorts International has enlisted Sotheby’s to come to Las Vegas to auction off a cache of Pablo Picasso paintings amassed years earlier by casino magnate Steve Wynn. The 11 Picassos to be sold have long been displayed at a Picasso-themed restaurant at the Bellagio Hotel & Casino. The Oct. 23 sale is part of MGM’s effort to become known as a powerhouse in contemporary art. By shedding the Picassos, the casino operator aims to make room and money to expand its contemporary art collection. The Picassos were originally picked out by Mr. Wynn, whom the industry sidelined after allegations of sexual misconduct emerged against him three years ago, which he has denied. It isn’t clear whether Mr. Wynn’s ties to the Picassos will help or hurt t...

How the world is grappling with another major coronavirus surge – Washington Post – The Washington Post

The prospect of an express ticket out of the coronavirus pandemic spurred the fastest development of vaccines in human history. But disparities in access and stubborn anti-vaccine movements have meant a world without the coronavirus is looking more and more unlikely. There are nations learning to live with it. Most simply do not have that luxury. While some, including Germany and Israel, have vaccinated more than two-thirds of their populations — the entire continent of Africa has only fully vaccinated some 2 percent of its population. Seventeen months after the World Health Organization declared a pandemic, the global divisions created by the no longer novel coronavirus are starker than ever. New vaccinations have nearly doubled from last month, according to CDC data – CBS News

The average pace of first doses being administered across the United States has nearly doubled from a month ago, according to a federal government tally. The uptick is the latest sign of growing interest in the shots amid surging COVID-19 cases around the country and a push to vaccinate children ahead of the new school year. Nationwide, the country was averaging around 441,198 new vaccinations per day as of August 5, according to figures released Tuesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That represents a 95% increase from the mere 226,209 average of first doses recorded a month prior, on July 5. The sharp turnaround comes after the average pace of new vaccinations had been plummeting for months, bottoming out around 218,696 on July 7. Since then, the pace of firs...

The Latest: Melbourne extends lockdown amid delta cases – Associated Press

GENEVA — A top vaccines official at the World Health Organization says the agency expects to make a decision next month on an emergency authorization for the Indian-made COVID-19 vaccine made by Bharat Biotech, a shot that has yet to be authorized by any Western regulatory authorities. Dr. Mariangela Simao, a WHO assistant director-general for vaccines, says the U.N. health agency’s assessment of the Bharat Biotech vaccine was “quite advanced” and officials hoped for a decision by mid-September. Few studies have been published on the shot. Indian researchers have yet to share any advanced research about the vaccine, which has been authorized and used in India. Scientists in India say the vaccine is about 78% effective, but there are some questions about how the vaccine performs in the r...

The four-day festival starts September 2 and features acts like the Foo Fighters, Run the Jewels, Lizzo, Tame Impala, and Megan Thee Stallion, among a host of others. While festival-goers can attend Bonnaroo unvaccinated, organizers of the festival are encouraging everyone to get the jab for covid-19, and to do so quickly, presumably because it takes about two weeks for the full effect of the vaccines to kick in. “Bonnaroo strongly encourages vaccination. The last day to receive ...

The former Fleetwood Mac singer posted a short statement on Twitter on Monday announcing her decision. "These are challenging times with challenging decisions that have to be made. I want everyone to be safe and healthy and the rising Covid cases should be of concern to all of us," she wrote. "While I'm vaccinated, at my age, I am still being extremely cautious and for that reason have decided to skip the 5 performances I had planned for 2021." Nicks, who is 73, had been scheduled to play shows in Colorado, California, Texas and Louisiana starting September 3. "Because singing and performing have been my whole life, my primary goal is to keep healthy so I can continue singing for the next decade or longer," her statement continued.
