Kourtney Kardashian Tears Into Fans Who Says Shes Pregnant – TMZ

Kourtney Kardashian wasn't having it when a slew of folks checked out some of her pics and jumped to the conclusion .... she's pregnant. Kourtney posted a series of photos with the caption, "say hi to my closet." The closet wasn't even visible to some of her fans, who dissected her image and somehow thought she had a baby on board. Call us crazy, but we just don't see it ... at all. Kourtney decided to fire back with more than a denial ... she made a statement about men needing to understand some basics -- "I'm a woman with a BODY." Waiting for your permission to load the Instagram Media. The Kardashians are kinda in a no win, ...

Covid-19 hospitalizations are surging again, but theyre different this time – CNN

Florida and Louisiana are now reporting a record number of Covid-19 hospital admissions, and other states are close. In Mississippi and Arkansas, daily admissions are at more than 87% of their earlier peak, and in Oregon, Alabama and Washington, daily admissions are at more than 75% of their peak. But patients hospitalized with Covid-19 this summer tend to be younger than in earlier surges. And with vaccines widely available, they're mostly preventable, too. Mercy Hospital in Joplin, Missouri, has surpassed its record number of Covid-19 patients more than once in the past two weeks, according to hospital president Jeremy Drinkwitz. Things are very different from last time, he says. "As far as the very distinct differences -- the age of patients for us," Drinkwitz told CNN. The hospital...

The New Delta Variant Meme Is Onto Something – WIRED

The Monitor is a weekly column devoted to everything happening in the WIRED world of culture, from movies to memes, TV to Twitter. Most days Twitter either ruins the day or keeps you sane. That little blue bird icon will either unleash a firehose of bad news or a good chuckle. ’Twas ever thus. As Covid-19 has raged on, the content has mostly skewed macabre, but with that came a fair amount of gallows humor. Things like the #2020Challenge and the trapped Suez Canal boat got folks through. This week, there was a new one: My Fall Plans / The Delta Variant. Somewhat similar to Expectations vs. Reality memes, the set up is simple: on the left side, a picture of someone or something (typically well-known or famous) with the text “My fall plans”; on the right side, an image of something that ru...

Digital Addictions Are Drowning Us in Dopamine – The Wall Street Journal

A patient of mine, a bright and thoughtful young man in his early 20s, came to see me for debilitating anxiety and depression. He had dropped out of college and was living with his parents. He was vaguely contemplating suicide. He was also playing videogames most of every day and late into every night. Twenty years ago the first thing I would have done for a patient like this was prescribe an antidepressant. Today I recommended something altogether different: a dopamine fast. I suggested that he abstain from all screens, including videogames, for one month. Over the course of my career as a psychiatrist, I have seen more and more patients who suffer from depression and anxiety, including otherwise healthy young people with loving families, elite education...

How Fermented Foods May Alter Your Microbiome and Improve Your Health – The New York Times

Higher levels of gut microbiome diversity are generally thought to be a good thing. Studies have linked it to lower rates of obesity, Type 2 diabetes, metabolic disease and other ills. People who live in industrialized nations tend to have less microbial diversity in their guts than those living in more traditional, nonindustrialized societies. Some scientists speculate that modern lifestyle factors like diets high in processed foods, chronic stress and physical inactivity may suppress the growth of potentially beneficial gut microbes. Others argue that the correlation between diverse microbiomes and good health is overblown, and that the low levels of microbiome diversity typically seen in people living in developed nations may be suitably adapted to a modern world. One subject on which...

You’re Overweight. Or Are You? – The Wall Street Journal

When it comes to BMI—the most common measure of obesity—the price is right. BMI, or body-mass index, is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in meters squared. A result less than 18.5 is considered underweight, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; 18.5 to 24.9 is healthy; 25 to 29.9 is overweight; and 30 or higher is obese. Medical experts rely on BMI to assess the prevalence of obesity because it’s simple, cheap and generally accurate. But the index doesn’t distinguish fat from muscle or other tissue, and that causes some people to be placed in the wrong category. “We have two different groups that tend to be misclassified,” said Luiz Guilherme Grossi Porto, a professor of physical education at...

Job Postings Requiring Covid-19 Vaccination Jump in Past Month – The Wall Street Journal

Vaccination is increasingly a requirement to be hired, as employers ranging from accounting and software firms to schools and restaurants are asking applicants to be inoculated against Covid-19. The share of job postings stating that a new hire must be vaccinated have nearly doubled in the past month, according to the job search site Indeed. The total number remains low, roughly 1,200 postings requiring a vaccination per million in the first week of August. But that is well up from about 600 in early July, and about 50 per million job postings in early February. Many of the postings don’t explicitly name Covid-19 as the vaccine required for employment, said Indeed economist AnnElizabeth Konkel, who wrote the report, but broader context of the job descripti...
