Breakthrough infections make up less than 3% of all COVID cases reported this year – WRAL.com

By Maggie Brown, WRAL multiplatform producer The number of breakthrough cases has more than doubled since Jan. 1, according to state data. Nearly 16,000 COVID-19 cases were reported among those who have already got their shot since the beginning of 2021, which is less than 3% of all cases reported. Ninety-two people who were already vaccinated have died from COVID-19 since the beginning of this year, state officials say, which is a little more than 1% of all reported coronavirus deaths. This data shows that getting vaccinated decreases one's chance of contracting the virus and dying, local health officials say. More than 88% of all coronavirus cases reported since May 6 have been among people who are not vacci...

Last year, Fauci said you cannot force someone to get COVID-19 vaccine – Yahoo News

White House medical adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci predicted last year he could not foresee a situation in which the government would mandate a coronavirus vaccine. “I don't think you'll ever see a mandating of vaccine, particularly for the general public,” Fauci said during a town hall with Healthline.com in August 2020. The idea, according to Fauci, was impossible. “If someone refuses the vaccine in the general public, then there's nothing you can do about that. You cannot force someone to take a vaccine," he said at the time. CDC DIRECTOR REFERS TO 'PREGNANT PEOPLE' WHEN RECOMMENDING CORONAVIRUS VACCINE DURING PREGNANCY Fauci’s prediction has just one caveat: medical professionals. “When you're in the medical sector, depending on the policy of a hospital, the hospital may say — if you refus...

Reservation Dogs review: Taika Waititi dives into his meaner side – Polygon

In January 2015, Eddie Huang was pissed. The chef-turned-TV-personality and writer of the memoir Fresh Off the Boat was about to see his book become a nationally broadcasted ABC sitcom, but in the process of making the pilot, he realized he hated it. He explained all this in the pages of New York Magazine, writing a vivid, swaggering essay about the uniquely excruciating experience of seeing his Taiwanese-Chinese immigrant story being diluted into something palatable for a white American audience. To Huang, there was something deeply compromising about a show that prioritized the comfort of white viewers over the verisimilitude of its characters’ lives, especially when those characters were based on his real-life family. While he ended his essay on a positive note about the histori...

Nicki Minaj and Husband Sued, Accused of Harassing Sexual Assault Victim – The New York Times

A woman who accused the rapper Nicki Minaj’s husband, Kenneth Petty, of sexual assault during high school filed a lawsuit on Friday against the couple, alleging that they harassed and intimidated her while trying to convince her to recant her account. The case dates back to 1994, when Jennifer Hough, then 16, reported to the police that Mr. Petty — a 16-year-old she had known growing up in Jamaica, Queens — had raped her after leading her into a home at knife point, the lawsuit says. Mr. Petty was arrested that day and was charged with first-degree rape, and subsequently pleaded guilty to attempted rape, said Kim Livingston, a spokeswoman with the Queens district attorney’s office. He served about four and a half years in prison, according to inmate records. According to the lawsuit file...

MDHHS ‘strongly recommends’ Michigan schools require universal masking when students return – WDIV ClickOnDetroit

Michigan health officials are strongly recommending schools require universal masking when students return for in-person learning. On Friday, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services updated its guidance for preventing the spread of COVID-19 within school buildings. “Because many students have yet to be vaccinated and students under age 12 are not yet eligible, layered prevention measures, including universal masking, must be put in place for consistent in-person learning to keep kids, staff and families safe,” an MDHHS release says. This update brings MDHHS guidance in line with that of the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention. “We are committed to ensuring Michigan students and educators are safe in the classroom, including those who may not yet be vaccinated,” said D...

Fact check: Infected with COVID-19 in the past? You still need the vaccine, experts say – Yahoo News

The claim: If you have natural immunity from a bout of COVID-19, you don’t need the vaccine Despite coronavirus cases and deaths rising in parts of the U.S., many Americans still remain undecided about getting vaccinated. A survey from the Kaiser Family Foundation Vaccine Monitor found 46% of unvaccinated respondents said they definitely will not get vaccinated by the year's end or at all. Part of that hesitancy was a belief the COVID-19 shot posed a bigger health risk than the virus itself – a fear cited by 53% of unvaccinated respondents. Another part may have to do with the idea vaccines are completely unnecessary, particularly if you have already been sick before.  "If you are considering getting the covid vaccine please go get your SARS cov 2 IgG level checked first," reads an Aug. 7...
