As Childrens COVID Cases Surge, Theres Another Virus On The Rise – NPR

At the moment there is little data available on the impact of contracting COVID-19 and the respiratory syncytial virus (pictured), and whether together they can make a person sicker. But health officials worry it could put young patients — who are not eligible for the coronavirus vaccine — at greater risk. ‘Like Choosing a Pope’: How Succession Got Messy at ‘Jeopardy!’ – The New York Times

And the job itself is, as any Hollywood agent would tell you, a pretty sweet gig. When the “Jeopardy!” cast and crew gather on the Sony Pictures stage in Culver City, Calif., they film five 30-minute shows in a single day, the equivalent of one week of syndicated television. The host works roughly two days a week, two weeks a month — and toward the end of his tenure, Mr. Trebek’s salary was estimated at $16.5 million. Sony would not disclose Mr. Richards’s compensation, but several people familiar with internal discussions said it was significantly less. There are other perks to being the face of a show that is still watched by a broad audience on local network affiliates, a rarity as the nation divides into ever-more-partisan extremes and as traditional TV is supplanted by niche streamin...

First Case Of The Lambda Covid Variant Reported In Los Angeles, But It’s Not Yet Much Of A Match For Delta – Yahoo Entertainment

The first case of the much-talked-about Lambda variant of Covid-19 was reported by Los Angeles health officials on Thursday. But for all the fanfare, Lambda doesn’t seem to have been much of a match for Delta – yet. “We’ve only seen one Lambda variant among tests sequenced in our labs, and this was a sample from June,” said L.A. County Director of Public Health Barbara Ferrer. The fact that Lambda was sequenced in June and has not been found since would seem to indicate it’s not spreading rapidly — if at all — in the county which, according to Ferrer, saw the powerful Delta variant account for “99% of all sequences last week.” More from Deadline Lambda was first identified in Peru in December 2020, according to the World Health Organization. It’s become the dominant strain in South Ameri...

This is starting to look really ominous in the South, expert says, as US is among nations with highest rate of new Covid-19 cases – CNN

In the month of August, the US has so far reported more than 1.5 million new cases of Covid-19, more than three times the numbers for Iran and India -- which now hold second and third place, JHU data shows. And the seven-day average has topped more than 135,000 cases, well ahead of other nations. On a state-by-state comparison, Louisiana has the highest rate of new cases per capita, followed by Florida. "That's how badly things have gotten out of hand. There is a screaming level of transmission across the southern states right now. And now we're starting to see this happening among younger age groups," Hotez said. Florida on Friday broke its own record high in Covid-19 cases over the past week, reporting 151,415 new cases -- the most infections recorded during a seven-day period since t...

Kelly Clarkson Wants to Sell Montana Ranch Where Estranged Husband Living – TMZ

Kelly Clarkson is fresh off a huge victory in her bitter divorce case, and sources tell TMZ she now wants to go full steam ahead to sell the Montana ranch which she owns, but there's a fly in the ointment -- aka, her estranged husband. TMZ broke the story ... the judge ruled the prenup Kelly signed with husband Brandon Blackstock is valid. Brandon fought hard in the trial, but the judge upheld the prenup, which essentially says what she earned and acquired during the marriage is solely hers, and what he earned and acquired is solely his. Kelly, who rakes in $15 mil a month to Brandon's $10k a month, bought the ranch ... s...

Bill Maher Defends Matt Damon – “One Of The Most Likeable Guys in Hollywood” – From Bad-Faith “Woke Police” – Deadline

Bill Maher turned his New Rules segment against a preferred target, woke culture, this time in defense of Matt Damon, now “flailing around in cancel culture quicksand” for acknowledging he used a gay slur that was thrown around when he was coming of age in Boston, but stopped. “Okay, he was late to the party. To which we could say, ‘Welcome, glad you could make it. Or we could say, ‘You came later than I did. Die,’” ranted the host of HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher, calling the Stillwater star “one of the most likeable guys in Hollywood, with impeccable liberal credentials.” (Damon volunteered in an interview with the U.K.’s Sunday Times that he had recently stopped using a term derogatory to homosexuals after his daughter explained to him why it was offensive.) Rela...

7-year-old dies from rare brain-eating amoeba tied to California lake – CBS News

A child infected with an extremely rare brain-eating amoeba while swimming in a Northern California lake died in a hospital, his family confirmed Friday. David Pruitt, 7, of Tehama County, died from primary amoebic meningoencephalitis, or PAM, on August 7, said his aunt, Crystal Hayley. The boy was rushed to the emergency room on July 30 and then flown to UC Davis Medical Center where he was on life support with severe brain swelling, Hayley said in a fundraising site she created for the family to raise funds for his care and funeral. The infection is extremely rare, and there have only been 10 cases reported in California since 1971, the Tehama County Health Services Agency said in an August 4 news release. It said the boy was likely infected in a lake in Tehama County but didn't ...
