A South Florida teenager is in a medically-induced coma and has been placed on a ventilator after being diagnosed with COVID-19, according to local news outlet WPLG. Paulina Velasquez, 15, reportedly planned to get vaccinated but hadn't received her first shot. Her vaccinated mother tested positive for the virus but only experienced mild symptoms. "I just want to tell people this virus is not a joke, it's a real thing," Paulina's brother Tomas Velasquez told WPLG. "Before this, my sister was 100% healthy. The Department of Justice on Monday published an opinion indicating that coronavirus vaccine mandates are legal despite only being approved for emergency use. The judgment was brought to light as areas across the country have either mulled or implemented shot mandates in some capacity amid a surge in cases. The Food and Drug Administration's emergency use go-ahead "does not prohibit public or private entities from imposing vaccination requirements for vaccines that are subject to EUAs," the DOJ's Office of Legal Counsel wrote. The CDC is expected to advise fully vaccinated Americans to resume wearing masks while indoors in certain public settings amid a rise in COVID-19 cases largely due to the delta variant.
