Peoria, Phoenix, Tucson to again require masks in city-owned buildings and facilities – ABC15 Arizona

PHOENIX — The cities of Peoria, Phoenix, Tempe, and Tucson will again require people to wear masks, including those who have received the COVID-19 vaccine and those who have not, when inside city-owned buildings and facilities, such as libraries and aquatic facilities. In response to an increase in the B.1.617.2 Delta variant of the novel coronavirus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday updated its COVID-19 guidance around masks and recommended people wear masks when indoors in areas where there is "substantial or high" community spread. According to the CDC's online COVID Data Tracker, 13 of the 15 counties in Arizona, including Maricopa, Pima, and Pinal, are all considered to be in "high" or "substantial" spread. Cochise and Yuma counties are considered to be in "m...

Northshore mom on her breakthrough COVID-19 case: Im lucky that I was vaccinated – WDSU New Orleans

When Katy Monnet's two sick sons tested positive for COVID-19 after being exposed to it from a babysitter, she wasn't surprised. At 9 and 10, they're too young to get vaccinated. She got tested out of precaution, too, and the results were negative. "I was like, yeah! Vaccine works great!" said Monnet, 42, of Abita Springs. But as days went by, she started to feel nasal congestion and pressure, and her symptoms got worse. "Finally I got chills. And I was like, This is not like a sinus infection," she said. Monnet got tested again and was positive for COVID-19. According to the Louisiana Department of Health, well under 1% of vaccinated Louisianainas have contracted COVID-19, but the number of breakthrough infections — the term for when vaccinated people catch the virus — has gone up t...

Alaska reports more than 375 COVID-19 infections in one day, the highest tally since early January – Anchorage Daily News

Alaska’s latest COVID-19 surge accelerated this week as state health officials reported 376 new cases for Tuesday alone, the highest single-day tally since early January before the vaccine was widely available. Two new deaths were also reported: an Anchorage man and a Soldotna man, both in their 70s. The state reported 526 new infections total for Monday and Tuesday including 55 nonresident cases, another relatively high number, according to the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services dashboard. Nearly half the new nonresident cases, or 27, came out of the seafood industry in Unalaska, according to a state health department spokesperson. The remaining cases were scattered around the state in small numbers. In addition to 379 Alaskans who h...

Delta variant is a tougher investment risk to peg than inflation, market forecaster Jim Bianco warns – CNBC

The Wall Street forecaster who warned investors to brace for once in a generation inflation has a new concern: Delta variant cases sparking new economic restrictions. According to Jim Bianco, the emerging risk will hinder the ability to pick market winners and losers into fall. "This is the toughest one [risk] for investors to get their head around," the Bianco Research president told CNBC's "Trading Nation" on Wednesday. In Bianco's bearish scenario, rising Covid-19 cases would hurt economic activity and earnings. "You could see a big rotation away from the reopening stocks," said Bianco, who sees gaming, hotel, airline and cruise line stocks among the most vulnerable groups. On the other hand, he believes the risk could boost technology and stay-at-home trades. If t...

Bizarre Shooting at Screening of The Forever Purge Leaves TikTok Star Wounded, Companion Dead – Gizmodo

Screenshot: Lucas Ropek/TikTok A 19-year-old TikTok star and his friend were gunned down in a California movie theater on Monday, in a bizarre and bloody episode that police still have little explanation for. The incident occurred during a showing of The Forever Purge, the most recent installment of the grisly horror movie franchise, at a Regal Cinemas in Corona—a suburb southeast of Los Angeles. Anthony Barajas, who has more than 900,000 followers on TikTok, is now in critical condition, and his friend, 18-year-old Rylee Goodrich, died from her injuries at the scene. The carnage, which police are calling an “unprovoked attack,” weirdly went unnoticed by movie theater staff, who said that they “hadn’t heard any gunshots” and only stumbled upon the pair when they came in to clean ...

Dusty Hill, Long-Bearded Bassist for ZZ Top, Dies at 72 – The New York Times

Dusty Hill, the quiet, bearded bass player who made up one third of ZZ Top, among the best-selling rock bands of the 1980s, has died at his home in Houston. He was 72. His bandmates Frank Beard and Billy Gibbons announced the death on Wednesday through Facebook and Instagram. They did not provide a cause or say when he died. Starting in the early 1970s, ZZ Top racked up dozens of hit records and packed hundreds of arenas a year with their powerful blend of boogie, Southern rock and blues. But the band really took off in the 1980s, when Mr. Gibbons, the lead singer and guitarist, and Mr. Hill grew their signature 20-inch beards and the band released a series of albums that added New Wave synthesizers — often played by Mr. Hill — to their hard-driving guitars, producing MTV-friendly hits l...
