Riot made some chill beats for creators to stream to – The Verge

League of Legends developer Riot is making something new — and very chill. The company just released an album called Sessions: Vi, which is packed with 37 lo-fi tracks from producers like Chromonicci, Junior State, Laxcity, and Tennyson. The idea, the company says, is to offer “stream-safe” music that creators on platforms like YouTube and Twitch can use, without having to worry about copyright strikes. The album is available to stream now on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube. In typical Riot fashion, there’s also a narrative album. The title is in reference to League character Vi, a criminal with high-tech gauntlets, and Riot’s head of music Toa Dunn says the album is meant to reflect a day in her life. The tracks are divided into three main parts, with vibes to represent aftern...

Is this whats causing long Covid? Virus stops oxygen flowing around the body properly, study finds – Daily Mail

Changes to blood cells caused by the coronavirus may explain why so many patients suffer from long Covid, researchers say. German researchers have found that the virus alters the size and stiffness of red and white blood cells, making it harder to get oxygen and nutrients around the body.  Their small study of 55 people found that these changes can last for several months, which may explain why many Covid patients become 'long haulers'.  They believe the disruption to oxygen flow is the root of the common symptoms which plague long Covid patients - breathing issues, tiredness and headaches.  But these physical alterations to the blood cells may also explain why some very sick Covid patients develop blood clots or suffer organ damage. Scientists from the Max Planck Center for Physics and M...

As worries emerge about the delta variant and the J&J shot, health officials — and, so far, the research — say the vaccinated are still protected – MarketWatch

The delta variant is already the most dominant strain of the virus in some U.S. states, and that’s putting some Americans easing back into “normal” life on edge. This variant, which was first identified in India in December, now makes up nearly half of COVID-19 cases in some regions and one-quarter of cases in the U.S., based on virus samples that have been sequenced, according to remarks made Thursday by Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Delta’s takeover in the U.S. is inevitable, but it’s still unknown how the more transmissible strain will impact a country with vaccination rates that fluctuate wildly depending on the region. About 47% of people in the U.S. are fully vaccinated, but at least 1,000 counties, primarily in southe...

New York reports increase in anaplasmosis, a rare tick-borne illness – Fox News

Health officials in New York’s Onondaga County are alerting residents about a rare tick-borne illness that could cause severe disease after noting an uptick in recent cases. The county’s health commissioner said Thursday that there have been six cases of anaplasmosis already reported in 2021, compared to just three cases reported over the last five years.  Anaplasmosis is a bacterial disease spread to people through tick bites, primarily involving the blacklegged tick and the western blacklegged tick, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Symptoms typically appear within one to two weeks after a bite, and may include fever, chills, severe headache, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and loss of appetite.  MAINE CONFIRMS TICK-BORNE POWASSAN VIRUS CASE:...

J&J says vaccine works against delta variant; WHO pushes Western nations to accept travelers with Chinese vaccines: COVID-19 updates – USA TODAY

Concern about the highly transmissible delta COVID-19 variant and its spread among the unvaccinated continues to grow as U.S. cases rise, but positive news about vaccines' ability to fight the virus keeps coming. Thursday, Johnson & Johnson said its one-dose shot protects against the delta variant, citing lab tests of vaccine recipients' blood. And amid concerns their shot might require a booster, the company said its immune response lasts eight months and counting. Public health experts say the variant poses the most danger in regions where vaccinations are sparse.  The variants “are able to find any gaps in our protection,” Dr. Hilary Babcock of Washington University at St. Louis said, pointing to how hospital beds and intensive care units in Missouri’s least-vaccinated southwestern...
