Long Beach, LA County COVID-19 cases are ticking back up • Long Beach Post News – Long Beach Post

The case rate and positivity rate for Long Beach is still low, to be sure—particularly compared to the peak of the pandemic in early- to mid-January. On Jan. 7, the city’s positivity rate was 17.8%. But the positivity rate in Long Beach doubled from 1% on June 18 to 2.1% on June 29. That rise would have been enough to have put the city in the “orange tier” according to the state’s former system for determining when to enact stricter safety measures. This graph shows the testing positivity rate for COVID-19 in Long Beach over the past 60 days. In Los Angeles County, 1.2% of people are testing positive for the virus as of Wednesday, compared to .04% on June 12. County officials have noted in recent weeks that the number of people getting tested has dropped dramatically from the ...

More than 100 staff members at Houston Methodist Hospital who were fired after they refused to be vaccinated for COVID-19 appealed a judge’s ruling upholding the hospital’s right to terminate their employment. “We are going to most likely go all the way up to the Supreme Court,” Jennifer Bridges, a registered nurse and the lead plaintiff in the lawsuit filed by 117 former employees of the hospital, told Yahoo News.

There Was a Hidden Covid-19 Epidemic Among Household Pets, Study Suggests – Gizmodo

Photo: Vadim Ghirda (AP) Cuddling up to your pets during the pandemic may be riskier than assumed—for the pets, that is. New research out this week suggests humans are regularly transmitting covid-19 infections to their four-legged friends, though pets don’t seem to spread it further to other humans in the home. Though most infections from the coronavirus tend to be mild or asymptomatic, the findings may warrant added caution for pet owners who contract the viral illness. Since early on in the pandemic, there have been reports of animals catching the virus behind covid-19. Dogs, cats (big and small), and members of the weasel family, like minks and otters, are all known to have been infected, usually through contact with humans. But with the exception of minks, nearly all of these cas...

Shannon Lee: Does Quentin Tarantino Hate Bruce Lee? Or Does It Just Help Sell Books? (Guest Column) – Hollywood Reporter

Amid Quentin Tarantino’s media tour to promote the new release of his novelization of 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the director stopped by Joe Rogan’s Spotify podcast. During the June 29 interview, Tarantino was asked about the criticism over the film’s depiction of Bruce Lee — specifically, a fight scene in which Brad Pitt’s character, Cliff, easily knocks down the Lee character, portrayed by Mike Moh. Tarantino told Rogan: “I can understand his daughter having a problem with it — it’s her fucking father, I get that,” before quickly dismissing others’ criticism.  Shannon Lee, the daughter of Bruce Lee, was among those who had spoken out about the scene at the time of the film’s release. And, in response to a request for comment from The Hollywood Reporter...

New, deadly bacteria may be lurking in US; CDC warns of three puzzling cases – Ars Technica

Enlarge / Burkholderia pseudomallei grown on sheep blood agar for 24 hours. Burkholderia pseudomallei is a Gram-negative aerobic bacteria, and it's the causative agent of melioidosis. A deadly soil bacterium common in tropical and subtropical climates has mysteriously infected three people in three different US states, killing at least one, according to a health alert from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While US cases of the infection periodically pop up in travelers, none of the three infected people have recent travel history that could easily explain how they picked up the dangerous germ. The bacteria, Burkholderia pseudomallei, usually infects by direct contact with an environmental source, i.e. contaminated soil or water. ...

Michigan teen dies after getting COVID-19 vaccine; CDC investigating – The Detroit News

The death of a Michigan teen after he received a COVID-19 vaccine is being investigated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, a spokeswoman for the agency told The Detroit News on Friday. "CDC is aware of a 13-year-old boy in Michigan who died after receiving a COVID-19 vaccination," spokeswoman Jade Fulce wrote in an email. "This case is currently under investigation and until the investigation is complete, it is premature to assign a specific cause of death.  "When a serious adverse event, like death, is reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) after COVID-19 vaccination, CDC requests and reviews all medical records associated with the case, including death certificates, and autopsy reports," she added. "While some reported adverse events ma...
