Ingeniously Simple Dental Treatment Could Heal Tooth Cavities Without Any Fillings – ScienceAlert

Scientists have invented a product that can encourage tooth enamel to grow back, which means we could finally have a game-changing way to treat dental cavities. In 2018, researchers at the University of Washington announced the development of a treatment based on peptides - short chains of amino acids, linked by peptide bonds, that aren't long enough to be considered full proteins.   When applied to artificially created dental lesions in a laboratory setting, the product remineralized tooth enamel, effectively "healing" the lesion. "Remineralization guided by peptides is a healthy alternative to current dental health care," said materials scientist Mehmet Sarikaya. Tooth enamel is produced by a type of cell called an ameloblast; these secrete the proteins that form enamel while the t...

Birthday Parties as Virus Vector – The New York Times

K.J. Seung, the chief of strategy and policy for Partners in Health’s Massachusetts Covid response, who helped set up the contact tracing system, said it has been hard for contact tracers to clearly demonstrate that people were contracting the virus in small private gatherings. Public exposures, like at a factory or a wedding, were easier for them to track. Individuals often didn’t share the nights they had a cousin over for dinner or drove a friend home from work, whether out of shame or forgetfulness — and if they did, they were reluctant to name names. “Small social gatherings are the most difficult locations to trace,” he said. Yet “when we talked to contact tracers around the country, they were like: Yeah, people are getting infected at these small gatherings.” So much behavior aroun...

Florence Pugh talks criticism over her relationship with Zach Braff – CNN

The actress, who has a major role in the upcoming "Black Widow," says that because she is 25 and Braff is 46, they often face criticism about their age difference. "I think it bugs people that it's not who they expected," Pugh told the Sunday Times. She continued: "But it's my life and I'm not doing anything to please people or to make it a better headline or story. I want to also be a person!" Pugh said she often faces negative responses from people online when she posts something about Braff. "I'm 24 years old," she said. "I have been working since I was 17 years old. I have been earning money since I was 17 years old. I became an adult when I was 18 years old, and I started paying taxes when I was 18 years old. I'll underline this fact: I am 24 years old. I do not n...

Disney drops boys and girls from fireworks announcement | TheHill – The Hill

Disney has removed the phrase "ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls" from a greeting announcing its widely recognized Magic Kingdom fireworks show. The change is "part of a broader effort," a Disney spokesperson told CBS News. "It's not about one or two things." "Good evening, dreamers of all ages," an announcer now says in the greeting.  CBS notes that this development comes just months after Disney announced that it would be adding "inclusion" as a fifth component to its customer service priorities. The original four components were: safety, courtesy, show and efficiency. "We want our guests to see their own backgrounds and traditions reflected in the stories, experiences and products they encounter in their interactions with Disney," the company said at the time. Part...

Quentin Tarantino Buys L.A.’s Vista Theatre – Deadline

Quentin Tarantino has purchased Los Angeles’ the historic Sunset Boulevard venue Vista Theatre, the director and film buff announced on a podcast. “I bought the Vista on Sunset,” Tarantino said today on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast. “We’ll probably open it up around Christmas time. And again: only film. It won’t be a revival house. We’ll show new movies that come out where they give us a film print. It’s not going to be like the New Beverly. The New Beverly has its own vibe.” Tarantino bought the Landmark New Beverly in 2007. That venue, which shows 35mm and 16mm films, reopened last month. Vista Theatre, April 2020 AP Photo/Chris Pizzello “The Vista is like a crown jewel kind of thing,” Tarantino said. “We’ll show older films, but it will be l...

New obesity drug semaglutide is safe and effective for weight loss and diabetes – Vox.com

After learning that the venom of a Gila monster lizard contained hormones that can regulate blood sugar, Daniel Drucker started wondering why. And could the venom somehow help treat diabetes? Drucker is a scientist and endocrinologist at the University of Toronto who has dedicated his career to understanding the universe of hormones in the body, which do everything from regulating appetite to helping with digestion. His curiosity about the Gila monster led to a call with a zoo in Utah. In 1995, Drucker had a lizard shipped from Utah to his lab and began experiments on the deadly venom. Ten years later, a synthetic version of a hormone in the venom became the first medicine of its kind approved to treat type 2 diabetes. Known as a GLP-1 (for glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agoni...

Fears arise that Lambda COVID-19 variant from Peru may be resistant to vaccines – New York Post

Scientists fear that a highly contagious new COVID-19 variant that is ravaging Peru may be resistant to vaccines. The Lambda mutation, or C.37, appears to have emerged in Peru last August — and is now being blamed for the country having the highest pandemic death rate in the world. The concerning strain has since spread to around 30 countries, mostly in Latin America — but also as far as the UK, which has recorded at least eight cases, according to government figures. There are no known cases of the Lambda strain in the US, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In Peru, Lambda has accounted for 81 percent of new infections tested for variants since April, according to the World Health Organization. The South American nat...
