Group says coronavirus evolved in nature, renews call for scientifically rigorous investigations – Fox News

A group of scientists and doctors reaffirmed their belief that the SARS-CoV-2 virus evolved in nature while urging others to "turn down the heat of the rhetoric and turn up the light of scientific inquiry." The letter, which was published in The Lancet on Monday, is the second such to be published by the group, which includes physicians, veterinarians, epidemiologists, virologists, biologists, ecologists and public health experts from around the world.  The first letter, published in Feb. 2020, faced scrutiny after one of the authors, Peter Daszak, president of EcoHealth Alliance and member of The Lancet’s COVID-19 Commission, did not disclose competing interests. Daszak has since updated his disclosure statement to include information regarding EcoHealth’s work in China.  The group h...

One dose of psilocybin improved neural connections lost in depression, study says | TheHill – The Hill

The psychedelic drug psilocybin has shown promise in treating depression, and a number of clinical trials into the drug’s therapeutic effects have been conducted in recent years.  But now a new study published by researchers from Yale University in the journal Neuron this week is shedding light on how the compound, the active ingredient found in “magic mushrooms,” may produce its antidepressant effects.  Yale researchers administered a single dose of psilocybin to mice and used a laser-scanning microscope to image dendritic spines in the rodent’s brain in high resolution. The dendritic spines are small protrusions found on nerve cells that play a key role in transmitting information between neurons.  Stress and depression degrade and reduce the number of neuronal connections.  W...

COVID hospitalizations worsen for L.A.s Black residents – Los Angeles Times

Coronavirus case and hospitalization rates are worsening for Los Angeles County’s Black residents, a troubling sign less than a month after California fully reopened its economy. And the hospitalization rate for Black residents — who are less likely than other racial and ethnic groups to be vaccinated — grew by 11% while declining for Asian American residents by 12%, Latino residents by 29% and white residents by 37%. Experts expressed shock and alarm at the rise in hospitalizations among Black residents. The trend underscores how — despite L.A. County’s devastating autumn-and-winter surge —...

Delta Covid-19 Variant Gains Ground Among the Unvaccinated – The Wall Street Journal

At Cheyenne Regional Medical Center in Wyoming, health workers didn’t need genomic sequencing to tell them the highly contagious Delta variant had arrived. Younger patients started coming in about two months ago with symptoms of Covid-19. Many progressed from mild illness to respiratory distress more quickly than patients treated earlier in the pandemic, said Sodienye Tetenta, a critical-care physician at the hospital. Nearly all were unvaccinated. “We could see that this was not the Covid of last year,” Dr. Tetenta said. The Delta variant is hardening a divide between people who are fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and those who aren’t, prompting hospitals to brace for new case surges and health authorities to redouble vaccination efforts. Pfizer Vaccine Less Effective Against Delta Infections but Prevents Severe Illness, Israeli Data Show – The Wall Street Journal

TEL AVIV—Data from Israel suggests Pfizer Inc.’s vaccine is less effective at protecting against infections caused by the Delta variant of Covid-19 but retains its potency to prevent severe illness from the highly contagious strain. The vaccine protected 64% of inoculated people from infection during an outbreak of the Delta variant, down from 94% before, according to Israel’s Health Ministry. It was 94% effective at preventing severe illness in the same period, compared with 97% before, the ministry said. An Israeli official said Tuesday the health ministry findings released a day earlier were preliminary and based on data collected from June 6 through early July. The ministry didn’t release its methodology or the data on which its findings were based....
