There’s no evidence a Covid booster shot is necessary, says Dr. Ashish Jha – CNBC

There's no need for Covid booster doses right now, the dean of Brown University's School of Public Health said Friday, as highly transmissible, new variants test the protections of the available vaccines. "Let me tell you where we are: the data is very clear, if you've gotten your two shots of Moderna  or Pfizer  or single shot of J&J, you have a very high level of protection against all variants, including delta," said Dr. Ashish Jha. "I have not seen any evidence, so far, that anybody needs a third shot."  Jha's comments come after Pfizer and BioNTech announced Thursday that they are developing a Covid-19 booster shot intended to target the delta variant. Company officials say another shot may be needed because immunity from the vaccine appears to wane over time.  O...

New virus surge sends younger patients to Spains hospitals – Associated Press

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Julio Miranda had never felt the threat of the coronavirus too close. With an appointment for his first COVID-19 jab scheduled for mid-July, the 48-year-old house painter was, like many in the vaccine-abundant developed world, eagerly awaiting the end of his personal pandemic worries. Then a colleague fell ill last month, followed by his boss’ wife. Gradually, all but one of his five coworkers found themselves in bed. Miranda, who is from Chile, also started feeling stomach cramps. Soon, he was lying on the sofa, struggling to draw every breath. “It’s only when the virus hits you that you take it much more seriously,” Miranda said this week from a hospital room overlooking Barcelona’s beachfront where he recovered after a week in intensive care, conscious but conne...
