Marin County reports surge of new cases as delta variant dominates – San Francisco Chronicle

Marin County health officials unveiled a new coronavirus data dashboard on Monday to help residents keep track of variant activity in the region, following a sharp rise in infections driven by the highly contagious delta variant. Delta, thought to be up to twice as contagious as the original coronavirus, made up about 70% of cases over the past 30 days that underwent genomic sequencing in the county, according to data collected by the health department. Marin County reported 17 new infections on Friday — the highest single-day total since mid-April, according to Chronicle data. The rate of new daily cases has been steadily climbing since the state reopened June 15, to about 3.5 cases per 100,000 residents this week, from a low of fewer than 1 case per 100,000. ...

Disneyland set to reopen its Jungle Cruise ride, minus the racially insensitive stereotypes – CNN

(CNN) — Disney has finally redone its Jungle Cruise ride after years of being criticized for the attraction's controversial depictions of Indigenous people. In January, the corporation announced it would rethink the classic Jungle Cruise ride, in which a skipper ferried visitors along a waterway while making jokes and funny comments. One of the sights visitors were taken past involved a scene featuring "natives," depicted as primitive and threatening. "As Imagineers, it is our responsibility to ensure experiences we create and stories we share reflect the voices and perspective of the world around us," said Carmen Smith, creative development and inclusion strategies executive at Walt Disney Imagineering, in a statement at the time. On July 16, the ride will open once more in Disneyland ...

How Khloe Kardashian Really Feels About Tristan Thompson and Lamar Odoms Public Feud – E! NEWS

A second insider echoes similar sentiments, telling E! News, Tristan "is making a very serious effort" to win her back. But despite their "healthy relationship" with each other, the fashion mogul "is not interested in a romantic reconciliation with him." Less than a month ago, Khloe and Tristan called it quits after giving their love another shot last fall. At the time, a separate source confirmed to E! News that Khloe initiated the split after ongoing speculation surrounding his loyalty. "They had been working through the cheating rumors for the last couple of weeks, but Khloe told Tristan he lost all of her trust and the relationship could not be repaired," the source previously shared. "Khloe really tried, but ultimately, felt too betrayed by him. She's done and says she will not g...

Coffee consumption linked to lower risk of COVID-19 infection – New York Post

Regular coffee consumption of at least one cup daily was associated with a lower risk of COVID-19 infection, according to a study. Researchers with Northwestern University published findings in the Nutrients journal, stemming from an analysis of nearly 40,000 participants in the U.K. Biobank. The team studied participants’ dietary habits from 2006 to 2010 and hypothesized the subsequent risk of coronavirus infection in 2020. Researchers specifically looked at participants’ consumption of coffee, tea, processed meat, red meat, fruit, vegetables and oily fish. After adjusting for factors like race, age, sex and other factors like physical activity, BMI level and history of certain medical conditions, researchers found “habitual consumption of 1 or more cups of cof...

Delta variant contributing to ‘perfect storm’ in Jacksonville, expert warns – WJXT News4JAX

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As more and more cases of the Delta variant of COVID-19 crop up nationwide, health experts in Jacksonville say they’re seeing a growing number of infections linked to the variant. The concern for an infectious disease expert at UF Health Jacksonville is that the Delta variant, which has become the dominant strain of COVID-19 in the U.S., is making patients sicker than before and shows no signs of tapering off anytime soon. “It’s the perfect storm that we’re seeing and, unfortunately, it does not look like it’s going away,” said Chad Neilsen, director of infection prevention for UF Health Jacksonville, which has seen its number of COVID-19 patients double recently. As of Monday, UF Health was caring for 60 people who were infected with COVID-19, 23 of whom are in the ...

Tennessee fires top vaccine official as COVID-19 shows signs of new spread – Tennessean

The Tennessee state government on Monday fired its top vaccination official, becoming the latest of about two dozen states to lose years of institutional knowledge about vaccines in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. The termination comes as the virus shows new signs of spread in Tennessee, and the more-transmissible delta variant surfaces in greater numbers. Dr. Michelle Fiscus, the medical director for vaccine-preventable diseases and immunization programs at the Tennessee Department of Health, said she was fired on Monday afternoon and provided a copy of her termination letter. It provides no explanation for her termination. Fiscus said she was a scapegoat who was terminated to appease state lawmakers angry about the department's efforts to vaccinate teenagers against coronavirus. ...
