Drinking alcohol may be related to cancer, study finds, but there are many unknowns – CNN

The researchers analyzed available data on population-level alcohol use in 2010 and on cancer cases in 2020. They assumed a 10-year period between alcohol consumption and the appearance of cancer, since the types of cancer included in the study -- lip and oral cavity cancer, laryngeal cancer and breast cancer (among females) -- have lengthy development periods and previous evidence of a causal relationship with alcohol consumption. Of the 741,300 new alcohol-attributable cancer cases diagnosed last year, men represented 568,700 cases, while women accounted for 172,600 cases, the researchers found. Most of these cancers were in the esophagus, liver and breasts. Nearly 47% of the alcohol-attributable cancers were linked to heavy drinking, which the authors defined as 60 or more grams of eth...

Mississippi health department blocks Facebook comments over COVID-19 misinformation | TheHill – The Hill

Mississippi’s health department is aiming to combat misinformation on COVID-19 by limiting users' ability to comment on its Facebook posts related to case numbers and vaccine distribution.  Liz Sharlot, a spokeswoman for the Mississippi State Department of Health, told The Associated Press that the “comments section of our Facebook page has increasingly come to be dominated by misinformation about COVID-19.”  Sharlot added that the false information included in the comments from various social media users could “mislead the public about the safety, importance and effectiveness of vaccination.”  While the comments section is open on department posts related to other health issues, including one on Tuesday about a program for cancer survivors, all posts from recent days related t...

The County Board of Supervisors today received the results of a new local survey with details about why some are still hesitant to get vaccinated and approved an investment of $24 million in federal funds to support COVID-19 response in high-risk communities. First, the Board received an update on COVID-19 rates in San Diego County. The number of local COVID-19 cases has been rising the past few weeks, increasing the case rate from 1.9 cases per 100,000 residents on June 15 to 3.7 cases per 100,000 residents now. The daily case count increased to 355 on July 12 and has been at or above 200 for the last seven days. “We are now seeing about double the number of cases that were being reported a month ago,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “This has le...

Zenia Mucha, Disneys Powerful and Feared Brand Chief, Is Stepping Down – The New York Times

He added: “She is unrivaled in times of crisis, certainly. However, when we had good news to announce, she was wonderfully strategic on that, too.” Ms. Mucha declined an interview request and tried to persuade a reporter not to write this article at all, arguing that her departure was not significant news. She was undoubtedly mindful of the fact that a story would add to a ticklish narrative: A notable number of important Disney executives are following Mr. Iger out the door. They include Alan N. Braverman, Disney’s top lawyer, who also announced his retirement on Tuesday; Mr. Braverman, 74, has been general counsel since 2003. The leaders of Disney’s art-film division decamped last month. So did Disney’s human resources chief. In an internal email of their own on Tuesday, Mr. Chapek and ...

Don Cheadle Confused by Emmy Nom for ‘Falcon and Winter Soldier’ Cameo: ‘I Don’t Really Get It’ – IndieWire

Cheadle earned an Emmy nomination for just over three minutes of screen time. The 2021 Emmy Award nominations included a tidal wave of snubs and surprises, but no single nomination is more of a head-scratcher than Don Cheadle’s bid for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series. The now 11-time Emmy nominee landed a spot in the category thanks to what amounts to a three-minute cameo in the pilot episode of “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” Cheadle’s two scenes are hardly an acting showcase, and even he was a bit baffled by his nominations. “Thanks, well wishers. sorry, haters,” Cheadle wrote on his Twitter page. “I don’t really get it either. buuuuuuuuuut on we go…” Cheadle reprises his Marvel Cinematic Universe character James Rhodes in “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” for...

Secret Side Effects of Eating Apples Eat This, Not That! – msnNOW

As sure as God made little green apples, America's most abundant fruit is loaded with health-promoting nutrients like antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other good-for-you compounds. It's hard to go wrong when you start your day shining up a Mac, Red Delicious, or Honey Crisp on your sleeve. It's no wonder some clever Welsh bloke from Pembrokeshire had the wisdom to coin the adage that eventually shortened to, "an apple a day keeps the doctor away." That pearl of wisdom still holds true. In the pantheon of snack foods, the apple reigns supreme as the largest source of antioxidants from fruits consumed in the United States. These plant-based compounds containing phenols can halt the reaction of free radicals with o...

Hospitalizations rising again as delta variant spreads among the unvaccinated, doctors say – CNBC

Top infectious disease specialists say the spread of the delta variant across unvaccinated pockets of the country is causing flare-ups and leading to an increase in hospitalizations as cases climb. Nationwide, cases are once again on the rise as the highly transmissible variant takes hold as the dominant strain in the U.S. The seven-day average of newly confirmed Covid cases has climbed to about 23,300 a day, almost double the average from a week ago, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. Health officials and physicians have been hoping that high vaccination rates among the most vulnerable and oldest Americans would keep hospitalizations, which generally lag new cases by a few weeks, from also rising. But that hasn't materialized so far, doctors said on a ...
