The crew members on Discovery’s "Deadliest Catch" learned of the death of their friend and fellow fisherman, Nick McGlashan, in the latest episode of the series. Scientist Opens Up About His Early Email to Fauci on Virus Origins – Yahoo News

Among the thousands of pages of Dr. Anthony S. Fauci’s emails released recently by BuzzFeed News, a short note from Kristian Andersen, a virologist at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif., has garnered a lot of attention. Over the past year, Dr. Andersen has been one of the most outspoken proponents of the theory that the coronavirus originated from a natural spillover from an animal to humans outside of a lab. But in the email to Dr. Fauci in January 2020, Dr. Andersen hadn’t yet come to that conclusion. He told Dr. Fauci, the government’s top infectious disease expert, that some features of the virus made him wonder whether it had been engineered, and noted that he and his colleagues were planning to investigate further by analyzing the virus’s genome. The researchers pu...

National parks draw huge crowds; delta is a variant of concern, CDC says: Latest COVID-19 updates – USA TODAY

Americans locked down for a year or more are finally getting out, and a lot of them are headed to national parks — so many that some parks are setting up reservation systems, such as those controlling the flow at California’s Yosemite National Park and Maine’s Acadia National Park. In 2020, the National Park Service received 237 million recreation visits, down more than 90 million visits (27.6%) from 2019. The decrease was due largely to temporary park closures in response to the pandemic. Visitation was the lowest since 1980. Now the parks are booming again. Yellowstone National Park's website emphasizes "if you don’t have a reservation, the nearest campsite or hotel room may be hours away." Great Falls National Park outside Washington, D.C., warns that "on weekends, if the park fills an...

Im Fat And Diabetic. Heres Why Your Concern For My Health Is Destructive. – HuffPost

I brace myself for my doctor’s words.  “So, your A1C is high. It’s in the diabetic range.”  After our televisit, I hang up and try to bring myself to say or even write, “I’m diabetic” or “I have diabetes.” The words are bitter in my mouth and turn my stomach. I think of all the “diabeetus” memes and jokes I’ve seen, especially since it’s around Easter, and “If I eat all that candy, I’ll be diabetic!” types of comments abound. No, no you won’t, because that’s not how diabetes works.  I feel emotionally punched in the gut when a favorite Facebook page, all about a front porch gargoyle, makes such a “joke,” related to Peeps candies. I privately message the page owner about the negative impact of such jokes on people already facing enough stigma and stress just living with diabetes. I...
