Mark Peel, the influential Los Angeles chef who founded Campanile with his ex-wife Nancy Silverton, died Sunday in Los Angeles. He was 66. It was reported that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer just nine days ago. Peel appeared on Top Chef Masters and as a judge on Top Chef in 2009 and 2010. Peel also made appearances on Hell’s Kitchen, Knife Fight and Kitchen Nightmares. Campanile was a favorite among Hollywood power players in the 23 years it was open. The James Beard-winning restaurant stood at 624 South La Brea before closing its doors in 2012. Mark Peel, the revolutionary chef who helped pioneer California cuisine and establish Los Angeles as a dining destination, died Sunday. He was 66. Peel died Sunday afternoon at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center on Sunset Boulevard, according to his daughter Vanessa Silverton-Peel. He was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer only nine days ago, she said. Peel started working for chef-restaurateur Wolfgang Puck at Ma Maison in 1975, and helped Puck open Spago in West Hollywood in 1982, ushering in a dining renaissance in Los Angeles. After all, they're used to new episodes of the Paramount Network drama dropping right around Father's Day each year and continuing until the end of August. But given that Father's Day is literally today and no trailers have been released or announcements made about the return of the Duttons, fans are confused and a bit peeved at the moment.
