When in Doubt, Plantain Scramble

Gooey dollops of beige fufu dunked by hand into bowls of steaming hot, reddish-brown beef stew. Curried jollof rice, as orange as Halloween pumpkins, packed full of tender shredded chicken breast and fragrant fried onions. Barely sweet chin-chin—tiny fried squares of dough, crisp on the outside and scone-like on the inside. As a first-generation Nigerian American growing up in a small Central California town, I treasured these foods from my father’s homeland, which he would prepare for my siblings and I during occasional weekend dinners together. As a kid, I was entranced by the cooking—and the inevitable stories that would arise during the cooking—about schoolboy pants pockets stuffed with cooked sweet potatoes for a midday snack; or dried beef...

Conan: One Last Paul Rudd Mac and Me Clip for the Road – Vulture

<!-- -->Paul Rudd crashed Bill Hader’s final Conan performance. And you already know what he did. I mean, c’mon, Paul Rudd has been showing the same clip from Mac and Me on Conan O’Brien’s show (whatever network it may be on) since 2004. You didn’t think he’d let O’Brien leave without saying goodbye to Mac, did you? The bit started with Hader recounting a sketch that he and Rudd had done at a dress rehearsal at SNL, called “Ed Burns’ Grill Boys.” The sketch was just Hader and Rudd pretending to grill food while talking in the cadence of an Ed Burns movie, and it bombed spectacularly. Hader asserted that it bombed because Rudd refused to do the high-pitched voice needed for the bit. Which is what prompted a tuxedo’d Rudd to c...

Billie Eilish Apologizes For Use Of Racial Slur In Resurfaced Video: “I Am Appalled And Embarassed” – Deadline

In the compilation video published last week on TikTok, Eilish can be seen mouthing the words to Tyler, the Creator’s song, “Fish,” which included the slur. “Many of you have been asking me to address this,” Eilish wrote to her fans, “and this is something that I WANT to address because i’m being labeled something that I am not.” The Grammy winner, who is now 19, explained that she was “13 or 14” when she made the video in question. “I mouthed a word from a song that at the time I didn’t know was a derogatory term used against members of the asian community,” she admitted. “i am appalled and embarrassed and want to barf that i ever mo...

Many Parts of the U.S. Needed Persuading to Get Vaccinated. Not South Texas. – The New York Times

High death tolls elsewhere in the country have not necessarily translated to high vaccination rates. In Greenville County, S.C., where at least one in 508 residents has died, about 40 percent of those eligible have been fully vaccinated. In East Feliciana Parish, La., where one in 168 has died, about 29 percent of the eligible population is fully inoculated. And in the county of San Bernardino in California, where one in 455 has died, just 43 percent of eligible residents are fully vaccinated. In the Rio Grande Valley, vaccines are part of the region’s fabric, Dr. Prot said. Parents understand their children must be vaccinated against diseases like measles and polio before starting school, and that sentiment often translates to adults. She said she has seen patients complaining of upper ...
