Researchers Find COVID-19 Virus Was “Highly Human Adapted” – Exact Origins Still a Mystery – SciTechDaily

Scientists using computer modeling to study SARS-CoV-2, the virus that caused the COVID-19 pandemic, have discovered the virus is most ideally adapted to infect human cells — rather than bat or pangolin cells, again raising questions of its origin. In a paper published in the Nature journal Scientific Reports, Australian scientists describe how they used high-performance computer modeling of the form of the SARS-CoV-2 virus at the beginning of the pandemic to predict its ability to infect humans and a range of 12 domestic and exotic animals. “Humans showed the strongest spike binding, consistent with the high susceptibility to the virus, but very surprising if an animal was the initial source of the infection in humans.” — Professor David Winkler, La Trobe University T...

Coronavirus herd immunity is within reach for Bay Area. Here’s why. – The Mercury News

About 80% of adult Bay Area residents have detectable antibodies to the COVID-19 virus, up from about 70% a month ago, suggesting that the region is edging towards herd immunity — increased safety due to very low levels of viral transmission. That, too, represents improvement. “We’ve made huge strides on this,” Pan told the state’s Community Vaccine Advisory Committee this week. “Seeing this increase over time, with vaccination, is very encouraging.” The state’s studies, known as serological surveys, involve testing the blood of healthy people — taken at blood banks or doctor’s offices — to determine whether they carry antibodies from prior infectio...

Meghan Markle Used a Different Name on Lilis Birth Certificate Than She Used on Archies – Cosmopolitan.com

Meghan Markle is no longer using her royal title—at least not on her daughter Lili's birth certificate. TMZ obtained a copy of the birth certificate, and it shows that the Duchess of Sussex simply opted to use her given name "Rachel Meghan Markle." This marks a big change from her name on Archie's birth certificate, which Cosmopolitan UK notes is "Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Sussex." Meanwhile, Prince Harry listed his first and last name on Lili's birth certificate as "The Duke of Sussex, His Royal Highness," which is also a notable change from what he used for Archie's certificate, ahem: "His Royal Highness Henry Charles Albert David Duke of Sussex." It’s Liam Neeson vs. surface tension in Netflix’s passable thriller The Ice Road – The A.V. Club

Liam Neeson in The Ice RoadPhoto: Netflix At first glance, The Ice Road looks like an algorithmically engineered mash-up of The 33 (about Chilean miners trapped underground) and The Wages Of Fear (a French classic—remade in the U.S. as Sorcerer—in which several big rigs attempt to haul nitroglycerin across treacherous terrain), with the History Channel reality show Ice Road Truckers thrown in for good measure. That’s the basic setup, certainly: A cave-in at a northern Manitoba diamond mine buries over two dozen men, and there’s no means of rescuing them without the aid of equipment called wellheads, which weigh roughly 25 tons each and need to be transported across frozen lakes… in April, when the ice is starting to melt and the roads in question are officially closed. This scenario of...
