COVID-19 outbreak linked to teen church camp in central Illinois where few were vaccinated – Peoria Journal Star

More than 50 teen campers and adult staff members caught COVID-19 during an outbreak at a central Illinois church summer camp earlier this month, and at least one person was hospitalized, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health. Although all campers and staff were eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine, the state health department said only “a handful” of them had gotten inoculated against the virus, which has killed more than 600,000 in the United States. The camp also didn’t require masks, according to the state health department. “The camp was not checking vaccination status and masking was not required while indoors,” said a state health department news release. “All campers and staff went home and were asked to be tested and told to quarantine.” While the state’s news releas...

Is the box office back? Hollywood is hoping so as Universal Pictures reports that the ninth installment of the Fast & Furious franchise, “F9: The Fast Saga,” is expected to earn $68 million on 4,179 screens — the largest theater count for a single film since the pandemic shuttered the movie theater business in March 2020. The opening receipts for the series that began 20 years ago and has collected $6.2 billion in total global box office revenue falls within the range of previous iterations of the car-racing action series — which saw its peak in 2015 when “Furious 7” took in $147 million during its debut weekend, and its nadir in 2006 with “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift,” which earned only $23.9 million in its opening weekend. Internationally, the newest movie has already ea...

Daytime Emmys Give Apology for In Memoriam Error — Marguerite Ray – TVLine

RELATED STORIES The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has apologized for an error made during the 48th annual Daytime Emmys‘ In Memoriam segment Friday. During the telecast, the Academy included an incorrect picture while attempting to pay tribute to The Young and the Restless actress Marguerite Ray, who passed away in November 2020 (see video below). Instead, the segment included a photograph of Veronica Redd, the actress who took over the role of Mamie Johnson after Ray’s exit. (Mamie was Y&R‘s first regular African American character, whom Ray played from 1980 to 1990.) “We deeply regret this error and intend to re-edit the sequence for subsequent digital releases once a replacement image can be appropriately licensed,” the Emmys wrote as part of a serie...

Anti-vaxxers protest at reopening of ‘Springsteen on Broadway’ – NJ.com

As vaccinated attendees lined up for the reopening of “Springsteen on Broadway” tonight, an uninvited crowd of anti-vaxxers filled the street outside the theater to protest. The show reopened Saturday at the St. James Theater, and attendees were required to show proof they were fully vaccinated with an FDA or WHO approved vaccine. The small group of protesters shouted outside theater, holding signs that said “unmasked, unvaxxed, unafraid,” “no vax passports,” and “Bruce Springsteen is for segregation on Broadway.” Jujamcyn, the company that operates the theater, did not respond to a request for comment, nor did Springsteen’s public relations firm. The only vaccination exception made was for guests under 16, or “those who need reasonable accommodations due to a disability or sinc...

East Asia faced a coronavirus epidemic 20,000 years ago, a new study suggests – Insider

A coronavirus epidemic may have struck East Asia 20,000 years ago, a new study suggests. Ancient humans had to adapt to viral exposure, leaving unique markers in the DNA of their descendants.  Studying these changes to the genome might help researchers understand how to treat COVID-19. Visit Insider's homepage for more stories. As the world continues to reckon with the effects of the novel coronavirus over the past year and a half, new evidence suggests humanity's battle against the virus may have started much earlier. Genetic evidence shows ancient humans in East Asia were exposed to coronavirus 20,000 years ago, according a ...
