Fat-shaming by doctors, family, classmates is a global health problem, studies find – CNN

Weight stigma is so prevalent and so detrimental to a person's self-worth and willingness to seek health care, that it has become a matter of "social injustice and a significant public health issue," said Rebecca Puhl, the lead author of two new studies on the topic. The prevalence of weight stigma is especially significant because the causes of obesity are complex and often outside of personal control, said Puhl, who has studied weight stigma for nearly two decades. "We certainly have created a society that facilitates obesity, with an emphasis on fast and highly processed foods and a lack of physical activity," Puhl said. "And we're ignoring all the other pieces of the puzzle such as genetics, environment, biology, agriculture, prices of food, food deserts and accessibility. "Instead,...

John Krasinski responds to Amy Schumers pretend marriage jab – Page Six

John Krasinski just learned what it’s like to get roasted by Amy Schumer. The comic actor responded with some deadpan humor straight out of “The Office” when the bawdy comedienne joked on Instagram last weekend that he and wife Emily Blunt must have a “pretend marriage,” BuzzFeed News reported. Schumer said she reached that conclusion when she saw Krasinski’s film “A Quiet Place Part II,” in which he stars with his wife. “I loved every second of @aquietplacemovie even better than the first one which blew me away, Amazing to be in a movie theater,” Schumer, 40, wrote in a since-deleted Instagram post. “Although I’ve said for a long time I think Emily and John have a pretend marriage for publicity,” Schumer added. “But I still think you should see i...

Contrary to Earlier Research, Vitamin D May Not Protect Against COVID-19 – SciTechDaily

Observational studies have suggested that increased vitamin D levels may protect against COVID-19. However, these studies were inconclusive and possibly subject to confounding. A study published in PLOS Medicine by Guillaume Butler-Laporte and Tomoko Nakanishi at McGill University in Quebec, Canada, and colleagues suggests that genetic evidence does not support vitamin D as a protective measure against COVID-19. The ability of vitamin D to protect against severe COVID-19 illness is of great interest to public health experts, but has limited supporting evidence. To assess the relationship between vitamin D levels and COVID-19 susceptibility and severity, researchers conducted a Mendelian randomization study using genetic variants strongly associated with increased vitamin D levels. ...

First human case of H10N3 bird flu confirmed in China, but says its highly unlikely to spread widely among people – CBS News

China reported the world's first human infection of the H10N3 bird flu strain on Tuesday but said the risk of it spreading widely among people was low. A 41-year-old man was admitted to a hospital with fever symptoms in the eastern city of Zhenjiang on April 28 and was diagnosed with H10N3 a month later, China's National Health Commission (NHC) said in an online statement. "The risk of large-scale spread is extremely low," the NHC said, adding that the man was in a stable condition and his close contacts had reported no "abnormalities." No information was provided about ho the man contracted the illness. It described H10N3 as low pathogenic -- less likely to cause death or severe illness -- in birds. The NHC said there had been no human cases of H10N3 previously reported in th...
