Israel sees probable link between Pfizer vaccine and small number of myocarditis cases – Reuters

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo Israel's Health Ministry said on Tuesday it found the small number of heart inflammation cases observed mainly in young men who received Pfizer's (PFE.N) COVID-19 vaccine in Israel were likely linked to their vaccination. Pfizer has said it has not observed a higher rate of the condition, known as myocarditis, than would normally be expected in the general population. In Israel, 275 cases of myocarditis were reported between December 2020 and May 2021 among more than 5 million vaccinated people, the ministry said in disclosing the findings of a study it commissioned to examine the matter. Most patients who experienced heart inflammation sp...

Little-known illnesses turning up in COVID long-haulers – Salon

The day Dr. Elizabeth Dawson was diagnosed with covid-19 in October, she awoke feeling as if she had a bad hangover. Four months later she tested negative for the virus, but her symptoms have only worsened. Dawson is among what one doctor called "waves and waves" of "long-haul" covid patients who remain sick long after retesting negative for the virus. A significant percentage are suffering from syndromes that few doctors understand or treat. In fact, a yearlong wait to see a specialist for these syndromes was common even before the ranks of patients were swelled by post-covid newcomers. For some, the consequences are life altering. Before fall, Dawson, 44, a dermatologist from Portland, Oregon, routinely saw 25 to 30 patients a day, cared for her 3-year-old daughter and ran long distance...

Scientists help mice live 23 percent longer—the equivalent of 120 years old in human years | TheHill – The Hill

Israeli scientists increased the life expectancy of mice by 23 percent, which could allow  the average person to live up to 120 years old. According to a report from the Times of Israel, scientists increased the supply of a protein, SIRT6, that decreases with age in 250 mice.  America is changing faster than ever! Add Changing America to your Facebook or Twitter feed to stay on top of the news. The protein-rich mice were more youthful and less susceptible to  getting cancer. “The change in life expectancy is significant, when you consider that an equivalent jump in human life expectancy would have us living on average until almost 120,” Prof. Haim Cohen of Bar-Ilan University told the Times of Israel. “The changes we saw in mice may be translatable to humans, and if so that ...

Actor Ellie Kemper Is Under Fire After Photos Of Her Being Crowned Queen Of A “Racist And Elitist” Ball Resurfaced – BuzzFeed News

Bravo / NBCU Photo Bank via Getty Images Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt actor Ellie Kemper came under fire over the Memorial Day weekend after photos resurfaced online of her participating as a beauty queen in an organization that had historically excluded Black and Jewish people. Kemper was crowned the "Veiled Prophet Queen of Love and Beauty" at a 1999 ball in St. Louis organized by the Veiled Prophet organization, which has racist and elitist origins, according to civil rights activists who frequently picketed the event in the 1960s and '70s. The then-19-year-old Kemper's association with the organization — a group consisting of wealthy white elites cofounded in 1878 by...

Bo Burnham’s ‘Inside’: A Comedy Special and an Inspired Experiment – The New York Times

The incentives of the web, those that reward outrage, excess and sentiment, are the villains of this show. In a giddy homage to “Cabaret,” Burnham, in sunglasses, plays the M.C. of the internet, welcoming everyone with a decadent menu of options while disco lights twirl. It’s a lyrically dense song with camerawork that speeds up with its rhythm. Just as often, Burnham’s shot sequencing plays against the meaning of a song, like when he breaks out a glamorous split screen to complement a comic song about FaceTiming with his mom. “Inside” is the work of a comic with artistic tools most of his peers ignore or overlook. Not only has his musical range expanded — his pastiche of styles includes bebop, synth-pop and peppy show tunes — Burnham, who once published a book of poems, has also become a...
