Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure opens Friday – Los Angeles Times

A new Marvel superhero-themed land is set to open at Disney California Adventure on Friday, just in time to take advantage of pent-up demand for big-thrill theme park rides, high-calorie snacks and pricey souvenirs. The six-acre Avengers Campus was scheduled to open last July but was put on hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Its opening may alleviate the popularity imbalance of the Anaheim resort’s two theme parks, drawing visitors to Disney California Adventure and away from Disneyland. The new land, built on an area of the park that previously held A Bug’s Land attractions and parts of Hollywood Land, features characters from the Marvel Entertainment empire, which Walt Disney Co. bought in 2009 for $4 billion. Disney has released a slew of Marvel movies since the purchase and now i...

Simu Liu opens up about his anger and unhappiness over Kims Convenience – The A.V. Club

Simu LiuPhoto: Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images for Disney This week marked the release of the fifth—and unexpectedly final—season of beloved Canadian sitcom Kim’s Convenience, which ended its run prematurely this year after the show’s producers said they didn’t know how to move forward after the departure of creators Ins Choi and Kevin White. Among the many fans mourning its departure, the release of this final dose of the show’s funny and humane treatment of Asian-Canadian life was greeted with a pointed response from series star Simu Liu, who hopped on Facebook to let the world know about the unhappy circumstances under which the show was first filmed, and then concluded. Specifically, the Shang-Chi star laid out a numbered list of grievances, calling out, among others, the show’...

Bachelor In Paradise to swap out Chris Harrison for David Spade, other comics – The A.V. Club

Photo credits: Left: Chris Harrison (Michael Reaves/Getty Images), Right: David Spade (Ethan Miller/Getty Images) The Bachelor franchise finds itself in a tricky place at the moment, vis-à-vis staffing. That’s mainly because series host Chris Harrison—who departed ABC’s small universe of dating shows earlier this year, after facing criticism both within and without the Bachelorverse for comments he made about race during the controversy surrounding recent Bachelor contestant Rachel Kirkconnell—really was the series host, plural. Harrison not only helmed every season of both of the franchise’s alternating flagship shows, but also its various spin-offs, most notably the still running Bachelor In Paradise, which sends popular contestants from various incarnations of the franchise off to t...

Avengers ready to welcome Marvel fans at new Disneyland campus – Reuters

Spider-Man will fly high above Disneyland Resort's new Avengers Campus in California when it starts welcoming the public on Friday, tumbling through the air as guests below meet Iron Man, Black Panther and other Marvel superheroes. The six-acre (2.43 hectares) Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure Park in Anaheim is the Walt Disney Co's (DIS.N) latest redesign of its popular theme parks, which were closed for extended periods during the coronavirus pandemic. Highlights include an aerial Spider-Man robot that performs somersaults while flying 60 feet (18.3 m) in the air. A human dressed as Spider-Man will greet visitors at ground level. Guests also can ride a Spider-Man attraction called Web Slingers, where they team with the character to battle out-of-control Spider-Bots. Physica...

The Handmaids Tale Recap: Season 4, Episode 8 — Testimony – TVLine

RELATED STORIES I’m not sure what’s more deeply satisfying in this week’s The Handmaid’s Tale: the way June finally gets to tell the world exactly how Gilead abuses its women, or the way June kindles her fellow former handmaids’ latent rage until it builds to a crackling bonfire. Episode 8, titled “Testimony,” finds June appearing at a confirmation of charges hearing for Fred Waterford. The International Criminal Court proceedings are a precursor to a trial, and June doesn’t have to appear in person — but she wants to. Or, as she so picturesquely puts it while attending a handmaids support group run by Moira: “I can’t f–king wait.” But how does it go when June airs the Waterfords’ sins in a public forum? Read on for the highlights of the hour. GHOSTS OF THE PAST | At t...

New racism allegations hit Buckingham Palace – and not from Prince Harry or Duchess Meghan – USA TODAY

Already reeling from suggestions of racism in the royal family from Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan, Buckingham Palace was confronted Wednesday with explosive new allegations of decades of systemic discrimination against people of color – and with documentation to back it up. The Guardian, Britain's left-leaning newspaper and a leader in the longstanding movement to get rid of the monarchy, published a report declaring that Queen Elizabeth II's top courtiers banned “coloured immigrants or foreigners” from serving in clerical roles in the royal household until at least the late 1960s, according to documents the paper discovered in the United Kingdom's National Archives. "(The documents reveal) how in 1968, the Queen’s chief financial manager informed civil servants that 'it was not, in fac...
