Royal family missing the star power of Harry and Meghan – CBS News

A new statue of Princess Diana, to be unveiled at Kensington Palace in London on Thursday (what would have been Diana's 60th birthday), will honor a woman whose charisma, compassion and rebellious streak revolutionized royal affairs.  It will also be just the second time that her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, have been seen together since Harry and his wife, Meghan, began publicly criticizing the royal family from their new home in California. The first time was a stilted-looking encounter at the funeral of their grandfather, Prince Philip, on April 17. Prince William, Duke of Cambridge; Peter Phillips; Prince Andrew, Duke of York and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, walk in the procession.  Gareth Fuller...

Pennsylvania lifts universal masking order after more than a year, but businesses can still require them – WPVI-TV

ARDMORE, Pennsylvania (WPVI) -- As of 12:01 a.m. Monday, the universal masking order was lifted in Pennsylvania after more than a year. Those who are not vaccinated are still encouraged to wear them. Last month, state officials said Pennsylvania would lift its mask mandate on June 28 or when 70% of the state's adult population was fully vaccinated. June 28 came first. The CDC still requires people to wear masks on public transportation, on planes, in airports and at train stations. Businesses can still dictate whether or not masks are required in their stores and establishments, creating some confusion for customers. "They never know when they're coming in, if they should wear a mask, like they look around and half the employees aren't wearing masks," said employee Sofia Monteaner of ...

Post-Covid-19, World Risks Having to Pay Off ‘Immunity Debt’ – The Wall Street Journal

Doctors in France are calling it the immunity debt: When people avoided each other during the pandemic, they failed to build up the immunity against viruses that comes from normal contact. As regular life resumes, society may find payments on that debt coming due, in the form of worse-than-normal viral disease outbreaks. In early June, 16-month-old Toranosuke Tsukidate came down with a common virus that caused a fever topping 106 degrees Fahrenheit. The bug was spreading rapidly through his Tokyo daycare, said his mother, Miwako Tsukidate, 27, and the boy was hospitalized for oxygen treatment for a week. By the time Toranosuke was discharged, his mother observed the beds around him filling up with children suffering the same ailment, which is u...

Parts of U.S. could see “very dense outbreaks” as Delta COVID-19 variant spreads, Gottlieb says – CBS News

Washington — As the U.S. continues to navigate its way through the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Scott Gottlieb, the former commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, said areas of the country could experience "very dense outbreaks" with the concerning Delta variant continuing to circulate.  "It's going to be hyper-regionalized, where there are certain pockets of the country [where] we can have very dense outbreaks," Gottlieb said Sunday on CBS News' "Face the Nation."   The most vulnerable areas continue to be those with low vaccination rates and low rates of immunity from prior infections. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, many southern states have vaccination rates that lag behind the national average. "I think as you look across the United States, if...
