Mysterious Brain Syndrome Grips Canada – Yahoo News

Dr. Neil Cashman, a neurologist at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, who is investigating the illness, said it was a medical whodunit of the type seen only a couple of times a century. “From the standpoint of a mystery, there is usually something horrible like a murder — in this case it is rapidly progressive dementia, and psychiatric manifestations, losing everything at once that is controlled by the brain and the spinal cord,” he said. “It is terrifying.” But other medical experts questioned the condition’s novelty. Dr. Michael D. Geschwind, a professor of neurology at the University of California, San Francisco, who is one of the world’s leading experts on rare neurological outbreaks, hasn’t studied the cases or autopsies of those affected. But he cautioned that what can...

COVID-19 Vaccines Keep Showing They’re Truly Spectacular At Fighting The Coronavirus – BuzzFeed News

Amid a global tragedy, the striking effectiveness of vaccines against the coronavirus stands out as one of the pandemic’s few good news stories for humanity. And the vaccines are the success story that, so far, has kept on going. Vaccinations are proving to be just as effective in the real world as they were in clinical trials, while remaining highly protective against the more contagious variants spreading worldwide. And two recent studies found that immunity to the virus could last for years. While some viruses, most notably HIV, have eluded vaccination efforts for decades, SARS-CoV-2 has turned out to be an ideal target. “It’s going to sound odd, but the truth is we humans sort of lucked out,” said James Musser, a pathologist at Houst...

Harry and Meghan demoted below Prince Edward on royals website – Page Six

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex now appear below the Earl and Duchess of Wessex on the royals website. Following their Megxit to the states and an explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey criticizing The Firm, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been moved down on the list of senior royals posted to the Royal Family site. Fans noticed in previous weeks that the page was down while under construction. Now live once again, Harry and Meghan follow Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and the Wessexes. They previously ranked just beneath big brother Prince William and wife, Kate Middleton. Harry’s updated biography reads, “As announced in January, The Duke and Duchess have stepped back as senior members of The Royal Family. They are balancing their time between the Uni...

‘Conjuring 3’ Out-Scaring ‘A Quiet Place Part II’ At Weekend B.O. – Deadline

Saturday AM: New Line’s The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is beating Paramount’s second weekend of A Quiet Place Part II, with an estimated $23.5M to $22M. But there shouldn’t be any doubts: It’s a solid weekend at the box office, especially as the pandemic calms. Even the No. 3 title, Disney’s Cruella, is doing well, on its way toward a $11.3M second weekend, -47%, after a $3.28M Friday, -57%. Ten-day total for Cruella looks to land at $43.7M. Conjuring 3 made $9.84M on Friday to A Quiet Place 2‘s $6.2M (-68% from a week ago – remember, Thursday previews were rolled into Friday). A Quiet Place 2‘s second weekend hold of -54% is very respectable for a horror movie. By the end of its second weekend, the John Krasinski-directed sequel will stand at $91.1M. 2018’s A Quiet Place...

The new Minerals Hall at the American Museum of Natural HistoryPhoto: D. Finnin/©AMNH If you love things that sparkle with all the colors of the rainbow, glow in the dark, and seem to defy any definition of the term rock, you’ve got to visit the new Halls of Gems and Minerals at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. I recently got a preview of the new space, and as someone who grew up visiting the old halls, I can assure you it’s a major upgrade worthy of the museum’s spectacular collection. The Allison and Roberto Mignone Halls of Gems and Minerals are set to open on June 12, the culmination of a four-year renovation on the dated Harry Frank Guggenheim Hall of Minerals and the J.P. Morgan Memorial Hall of Gems, the public repository of some of the museum’s 200,000 ...

The coronavirus had crashed onto Britain's shores weeks earlier, and emergency doctors were initially uncertain how best to treat Tayah's constellation of symptoms, which included stomach pains and a bright red rash. They gave her antibiotics for a suspected bacterial infection, but her condition only worsened, her fever sp...
