Don’t Overlook the Georgia Oyster

Plenty of cookbooks touch on the topic of family history, or cooking rituals that have been passed down from generation to generation. But not many families are like Matthew Raiford’s. The James Beard Foundation Award–nominated chef lives and works on the farm in Brunswick, Georgia, that was originally established by his great-great-great-grandfather Jupiter Gilliard in 1874, just a few years after emancipation from slavery. Living on the farm for the past decade has meant stumbling upon family recipes, records of harvests past, 19th-century cookbooks, and even grocery ledgers from the early years of the farm. These documents became a jumping-off point for Raiford’s new cookbook, Bress ’n’ Nyam: Gullah Geechee Recipes from a Sixth-Generation Far...

‘Kim’s Convenience’ Stars Simu Liu and Jean Yoon Open up on “Painful” Lack of Diversity, “Overtly Racist” Storylines – Hollywood Reporter

The fifth and final season of Kim’s Convenience debuted on Netflix on June 2, the same day that star Simu Liu opened up in a Facebook post as he was feeling “a host of emotions” about saying goodbye to the beloved Canadian series about a Korean-Canadian family running a convenience store. Liu, who is about to see his profile skyrocket with the Sept. 3 release of the Marvel superhero epic Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in which he has the title role, has been open about some of those feelings in recent months (disappointment, anger, resentment) but last week’s post marked the first time he detailed at length why he has been wrestling with so much. Among his claims: the show suffered from a lack of diversity among writers and producers, there was discord behind...

A weight-loss drug described as a 'game-changer' by obesity researchers has just been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), representing the first time the agency has endorsed such a treatment in several years.   Wegovy, a weight-management therapy to be manufactured by Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk, is the the first FDA-approved weight-loss drug since 2014, but it's not entirely a new medication. The same drug, called semaglutide, has been used in the US and other countries as an anti-diabetic medication for years. More recently, however, evidence has shown that semaglutide at a different dosage also functions as a powerful and effective appetite-suppressant. In a study published earlier in the year involving almost 2,000 obese adults from 16 different ...

‘Damning’ science shows COVID-19 likely engineered in lab: experts – Fox News

"Damning" science strongly suggests that COVID-19 is a man-made monster, optimized in a lab for maximum infectivity before hitting the outside to catastrophic effect, two experts said Sunday. Writing in an opinion piece for The Wall Street Journal, Dr. Steven Quay and Richard Muller pointed to two key pieces of evidence to support the claim, which has increasingly gained steam after long being derided as little more than speculation. The first relates to the nature of gain-of-function research, in which microbiologists tweak a virus’ genome to alter its properties, such as making it more transmissible or more lethal.
