Napa County records 1st COVID death of fully vaccinated person – Los Angeles Times

Napa County reported its first COVID-19 death of a fully vaccinated resident earlier this month, even as the chance of experiencing a breakthrough infection remains exceedingly rare, public health officials said. The Napa woman was older than 65 and had underlying health conditions, county officials said. She died June 2 after a prolonged hospital battle. She had received the Moderna vaccine and had her second dose at least 30 days before testing positive for COVID-19, said Napa County spokeswoman Leah Greenbaum, citing information from the county’s epidemiology group. The woman had tested positive for the B.1.1.7 variant — newly named the Alpha variant by the World Health Organization — which was first detected in the U.K. To date, the county has confirmed seven cases of the variant...

The book was written by Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, the two women who wrote the New York Times story about the sexual misconduct allegations against Harvey Weinstein that helped kick off his downfall and led to the eventual rise of the #MeToo movement. Deadline says the “thrust of the film” is not Weinstein himself, but rather the “all-women team of journalists who persevered through threats of litigation and intimidation” to tell this story. Actress Ellie Kemper apologizes for participating in “racist” debutante ball – CBS News

Actress Ellie Kemper has apologized for participating in a controversial ball when she was 19 years old. Photos of Kemper at the Veiled Prophet Ball recently resurfaced on social media, and people quickly criticized the St. Louis organization's "racist" past and connections to the white supremacy.  "The century-old organization that hosted the debutante ball had an unquestionably racist, sexist, and elitist past," Kemper said in a statement posted on Instagram on Monday. "I was not aware of this history at the time, but ignorance is no excuse. I was old enough to have educated myself before getting involved." Kemper, who is best known for her comedic roles in "The Office" and the Netflix series "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt," was lambasted on social media when users recently brought ...

U.S. report concluded COVID-19 may have leaked from Wuhan lab -WSJ – Reuters

A report on the origins of COVID-19 by a U.S. government national laboratory concluded that the hypothesis claiming the virus leaked from a Chinese lab in Wuhan is plausible and deserves further investigation, The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing people familiar with the classified document. The study was prepared in May 2020 by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California and was referred by the State Department when it conducted an inquiry into the pandemic's origins during the final months of the Trump administration, the reportsaid. Lawrence Livermore's assessment drew on genomic analysis of the COVID-19 virus, the Journal said. Lawrence Livermore declined to comment on the Wall Street Journal report. President Joe Biden said last month he had ordered aides t...

Alicia Silverstone Goes Full-On Clueless In Her TikTok Debut – HuffPost

Alicia Silverstone ― and, by extension, Cher Horowitz ― is already a hit on TikTok.  The actor on Saturday joined the video-sharing platform with a recreation of an iconic scene from “Clueless.” In her debut clip, she appears in a replica of the yellow plaid blazer seen at the start of the 1995 classic as No Doubt’s “Just a Girl” plays in the background.  “Ugh! As if,” Silverstone proclaims, shoving away a teenage boy as in the original film. This time, however, the dismissed teen is played by her real-life 10-year-old son, Bear.  Fans certainly approved of the TikTok tribute. As of Monday afternoon, the clip had received over 6 million likes, while Silverstone’s account had garnered more than 1.6 million followers.  Check out the original scene below for comparison:  Fo...
