New infections drop below 15,000 for first time since March 2020, but summer surge is possible: Latest COVID-19 updates – Yahoo News

The seven-day average of new, daily coronavirus cases dropped to 13,277, the first time it has fallen below 15,000 since the first weeks of the pandemic in March of 2020, top U.S. health officials said Tuesday. The daily average has dropped to one-third the average number of cases seen just three weeks ago. Five months ago the U.S. was seeing 15,000 cases every 90 minutes. Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said barely more than 10,000 new cases were reported Monday. She noted that deaths and hospitalizations related to COVID-19 also have continued their precipitous decline. Walensky credited the 300 million-plus vaccination shots already administered across the nation for the encouraging numbers. "It gives me so much hope," she said. "Each ...

Photo: Hector Retamal (Getty Images) The debate over the origins of covid-19 is reaching a fever pitch. On Monday, the Wall Street Journal published an article describing a report circulated within the U.S. government last year, which found that a virus research lab in Wuhan, China plausibly could have been the source of the pandemic. At the same time, though, nothing much seems to have changed when it comes to actual evidence on the virus’s provenance. According to the WSJ, the report in question was prepared by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, a federal research facility in California, in May 2020. It was later referenced...

Gaza war, COVID-19 pandemic shattered Israeli resilience – study – The Jerusalem Post

The level of personal resilience experienced by Israelis hit a two-year low during the recent Gaza escalation and was significantly lower than during the peak of the COVID-19 crisis, new Israeli research revealed on Tuesday. The study also found that solidarity is on the decline. Researchers from Tel Aviv University and the Academic and Technology College of Tel-Hai examined the ability of 650 Israelis to cope with difficult events and crises. It showed that the level of personal resilience among citizens consistently decreased throughout the COVID pandemic and has continued to decrease – most significantly during Operation Guardian of the Walls. The researchers measured resilience on a scale of one (lowest) to five (strongest). In 2018, Israelis’ level of resilie...
