‘In The Heights’ & ‘Peter Rabbit 2’ Lower Than Expected In Openings As Pandemic Summer Box Office Eases – Deadline

SATURDAY UPDATE:  While it appeared that the summer box office was dusting itself off from the pandemic over the last two weeks, both newcomers Warner Bros.’ highly anticipated Jon M. Chu directed Lin-Manuel Miranda musical In the Heights and Sony’s Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway are currently filing less than spectacular results respectively with a No. 1 rank of $5M Friday, $13M 3-day and No. 4 place of $4M Friday, and $10.2M 30-day. Paramount’s A Quiet Place Part II, as we told you, crossed $100M yesterday after a third Friday of $3.75M, -40%, on its way to a $12.5M 3-day (-35%) weekend in second at 3,515 (-229) theaters. Don’t be surprised if the sequel reclaims the No. 1 spot this weekend, beating In the Heights, with a running total of $109.8M. Related Story ...

Covid-19 leads to brain changes & Alzheimer’s-like dementia, new AI-powered study finds – RT

According to recent US research, Covid-19 may lead to the type of brain changes common in Alzheimer’s disease, and a team of scientists has identified the mechanisms by which it may be causing such impairments. Cognitive disorders, including dementia, are increasingly being reported as a complication of the highly contagious SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid-19, researchers behind the recent study at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio have revealed.  “Reports of neurological complications in Covid-19 patients and ‘long-hauler’ patients whose symptoms persist after the infection clears are becoming more common, suggesting that [the virus] may have lasting effects on brain function,” said the authors of the study, which was published this week in the journal Alzheimer’s Research ...

Bill Maher Says the Young, the Woke and Kevin Hart Suffer From “Progress-o-phobia” – TMZ

Bill Maher went deep Friday night with blistering words for young people, super-woke folks and Kevin Hart ... diagnosing all of them with a severe case of "progress-o-phobia." Maher -- a take-no-prisoners liberal who is not afraid to call out like-minded individuals who he says go way too far -- lambasts Americans who complain things have never been worse. The 'Real Time' host makes a solid case ... we have achieved progress in race relations, gay rights, drug policies, and on and on, yet there's a sizable contingent who believe we've hit rock bottom. Bill calls out Kevin Hart in particular, who told the NY Times, "You're witnessing white power and privilege at an all-time high." Maher tears that apart with examples of past atrocities like Tulsa, KKK v...

Jennifer Lopez Spotted Wearing What Looks Like Boyfriend Ben Afflecks Shirt – Yahoo Lifestyle

Jennifer Lopez has reached the level of girlfriend status that most people eventually hit while dating their significant other. No, we're not talking about making the 'ship Instagram official. This has nothing to do with meeting the parents. And it's got absolutely nothing to do with the m-word (cough, marriage). We're talking about taking your SO's clothes and wearing them as your own. Yuuuup. You know the move. Maybe you wake up and throw on your boyfriend's hoodie and just... never give it back. Maybe you've been eyeing your girlfriend's jeans and decide to try them on... forever. Whatever it is, it's a crucial step for any couple to take and our J.Lo seems to have taken it with fiancé turned ex turned boyfriend Ben Affleck. ...

Even if the coronavirus did leak from a Wuhan lab, that wouldnt necessarily mean it was engineered – Business Insider

Two weeks ago, President Joe Biden asked the US intelligence community to redouble its efforts to find out how the pandemic started: Did the coronavirus jump from animals to people, or did it leak from a Chinese lab? Any investigation of a potential lab leak — the possibility that a lab worker got infected then spread the virus to other people — must in turn consider two options. One is that a worker was exposed to a raw virus sample collected from bats or other animals, while the other is that the virus was genetically engineered. The evidence for either option remains sparse, so the whole notion is still considered highly unlikely. So far, much of the discourse about the lab-leak theory has centered on the latter idea: th...

Teen suicide attempts spiked during COVID-19 lockdowns: CDC – Fox News

If you or someone you know is having thoughts of suicide, please contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255). The percentage of teenagers who were hospitalized for suspected suicide attempts spiked in 2020 and 2021 amid COVID-19 lockdowns, a new study shows. Researchers for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found the rate at which girls ages 12 through 17, in particular, were visiting the emergency department (ED) for suicide attempts between February and March of 2021 increased nearly 51% compared to the same period in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic forced schools and businesses to close their doors. Black and Latino communities are left behind in Covid-19 vaccination efforts – The Guardian

Coronavirus Although a few states have seen large increases in vaccination rates among Black and Latino Americans, most are still trailing behind Sat 12 Jun 2021 05.00 EDT When vaccines became increasingly available throughout America, US health officials moved quickly to try to convince large numbers of Americans to get vaccinated. But amid the mass vaccination rollout, Black and Latino communities, who are disproportionately affected by the pandemic, have been left behind in vaccination efforts, creating racial disparities about who was more likely to get a Covid-19 shot.Amid federal and local efforts to address vaccine disparity, vaccination rates for Black Americans and Latinos lag behind the general population, leaving many communities of color still unprotected against the Covid-...

‘Jeopardy!’ host Alex Trebek ‘could have been a standup comic,’ Ruta Lee says: ‘His delivery was remarkable’ – Fox News

Ruta Lee said she will always treasure the memories of her pal Alex Trebek. The star, who presided over "Jeopardy!" for more than 30 years, passed away in 2020 at age 80 in his Los Angeles home, surrounded by family. The late game show host announced in 2019 that he had advanced pancreatic cancer. "We were very close," the actress told Fox News. "We were neighbors. We lived just within a mile of each other." Lee recently penned a memoir titled "Consider Your A—Kissed!" where she shared personal memories in Hollywood. She has worked with numerous stars over the years, including Frank Sinatra, Burt Reynolds, Clint Eastwood, Johnny Carson and Fred Astaire – just to name a few. The "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" actress also befriended many fellow leading ladies, including Lucille Ball...

Both twice-widowed, two 95-year-olds found a new chance at love in 2021 – Upworthy

Each year, an estimated 1.8 million people in the United States are affected by cancer — most commonly cancers of the breast, lung, prostate, and blood cancers such as leukemia. While not everyone overcomes the disease, thanks to science, more people are surviving — and for longer — than ever before in history. We asked three people whose lives have been impacted by cancer to share their stories – how their lives were changed by the disease, and how they're using that experience to change the future of cancer treatments with the hope that ultimately, in the fight against cancer, science will win. Here's what they had to say. Celine Ryan, 55, engineer database programmer and mother of five from Detroit, MI Photo courtesy of Celine Ryan In September 2013, Celine Ryan woke up fr...
