Logging just 4,500 steps daily may help you live longer – Study Finds

DALLAS, Texas — For fitness enthusiasts who constantly count their steps, a new study has good news for those who always find time to squeeze in a few more each day. It turns out taking more steps per day can help you live longer. Moreover, researchers say it doesn’t matter if you take them all at once or in short spurts, just getting those steps in can lower the risk of premature death. The study, involving more than 16,000 women over the age of 60, also suggests that 4,500 steps per day is enough to help extend the human lifespan. In comparison to taking no steps at all, researchers find each additional 1,000 steps contributes to a 28 percent decrease in death among study participants. More daily steps may lead to more birthdays later on Study authors asked participants to wear a ...

Little Island, NYCs new floating park, is a marvel – New York Post

It’s a floating island, a pier, and a park — but it’s a miracle more than anything else. Little Island, the brand-new public playground off West 14th Street in the Hudson River, rises out of the water 200 feet from noisy Eleventh Avenue, but a world removed. It’s the biggest, and most creative, park opening since the High Line. The Big Apple has never seen anything like it. When it opens Friday morning at 6 a.m., New Yorkers will finally get to explore the undulating, “floating” green space dreamed up, and mostly paid for, by the Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation, headed by IAC chairman and former Hollywood mogul Barry Diller. New Yorkers would welcome the foundation’s no-strings, $235 million contribution to the park’s $265 million creation any...

Face masks effectively limit the probability of SARS-CoV-2 transmission – Science

Abstract Airborne transmission by droplets and aerosols is important for the spread of viruses. Face masks are a well-established preventive measure, but their effectiveness for mitigating SARS-CoV-2 transmission is still under debate. We show that variations in mask efficacy can be explained by different regimes of virus abundance and related to population-average infection probability and reproduction number. For SARS-CoV-2, the viral load of infectious individuals can vary by orders of magnitude. We find that most environments and contacts are under conditions of low virus abundance (virus-limited) where surgical masks are effective at preventing virus spread. More advanced masks and other protective equipment are required in potentially virus-rich indoor environments including medica...
