Old records shed new light on smallpox outbreaks in 1700s – Fox News

A highly contagious disease originating far from America's shores triggers deadly outbreaks that spread rapidly, infecting the masses. Shots are available, but a divided public agonizes over getting jabbed. Sound familiar? Newly digitized records — including a minister's diary scanned and posted online by Boston's Congregational Library and Archives — are shedding fresh light on devastating outbreaks of smallpox that hit the city in the 1700s. And three centuries later, the parallels with the coronavirus pandemic are uncanny. "How little we've changed," said CLA archivist Zachary Bodnar, who led the digitization effort, working closely with the New England Historic Genealogical Society. "The fact that we’re finding these similarities in the records of our past is a very interesting ...

Lady Gaga had a psychotic break after sexual assault left her pregnant – Yahoo News

Lady Gaga has revealed she suffered a breakdown as a result of sexual assault that led to pregnancy. The star was 19 when she was raped by a male music producer, who had threatened to burn her music if she did not take her clothes off. She says her alleged rapist then "dropped me off pregnant on a corner... because I was vomiting and sick". Years later, she had "a total psychotic break" and was in an "ultra state of paranoia" as a result of the trauma. Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, was speaking on the first episode of Oprah Winfrey and Prince Harry's new Apple TV+ series, The Me You Can't See, which tackles the stigma around mental health. She broke down in tears as she described her assault, which took place in her early days in the music industry. "I was 19 years old, an...

As Covid mutations spread, will herd immunity ever be possible? – CNBC

Passengers wearing face masks as a preventive measure against the spread of Covid-19 are seen on an escalator at Orlando International Airport. Paul Hennessy | LightRocket | Getty Images When the coronavirus pandemic started to sweep around the world in 2020, a number of governments and health authorities appeared to pin their hopes on "herd immunity." This approach would see the virus spread though society and cause infections, but also provoke an immune response in those who have recovered. If enough people gained these antibodies — say, around 60-70% of the population — then the transmission of the virus would gradually decrease, and those who had not yet been infected would be protected by the increasingly small opportunity the virus had to spread. Tha...

US Covid-19 vaccination pace is down by nearly half in the last month. These states slow to vaccinate may struggle this summer, expert warns – CNN

Health officials have pointed out, however, that such successes are largely contingent on getting the US fully vaccinated as quickly as possible. And right now, the rate of vaccination is slowing. The average daily pace of coronavirus vaccinations is down almost 50% from its April peak, according to US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data published Thursday. Over the past week, about 1.8 million vaccine doses have been administered each day, a 46% drop from the peak rate of nearly 3.4 million per day in mid-April. One expert told CNN that the health community is worried about what lies ahead. Clusters of unvaccinated people may become infected with Covid-19 as they move indoors to beat the summer heat, particularly in the South, noting that a similar situation happened last ye...

BTS Drop New English-Language ‘Butter’ Video – Rolling Stone

BTS have released their second English-language song, “Butter,” following their smash hit “Dynamite” from last August. Prior to dropping the accompanying video for the track, the group hosted a YouTube preview where the guys concocted buttered-up sandwiches and discussed the song, which they described as “charismatic” and hoped would “melt your hearts like butter.” In the “Butter” video, the superstar septet — RM, Suga, J-Hope, Jung Kook, V, Jimin and Jin — appear in black-and-white wearing slick suits before it switches to color as they dance, sing and rap. They each take a turn grooving in an elevator, dance together in a gymnasium and appear onstage under pulsating lights.  On the feel-good, flirty dance track, they sing about being “smooth like butter” and having a “superstar g...

Lil Nas X Helps Struggling Younger Version of Self in ‘Sun Goes Down’ Video – Rolling Stone

Lil Nas X has dropped a new video for “Sun Goes Down.” The track follows the release of the video for the self-directed “Montero (Call Me By Your Name),” which arrived in March. In the new clip, Lil Nas X appears in a white suit as he goes into a meditative state. He travels back in time to when he worked at a Taco Bell, spends time in his room, and goes to a school dance, where he experiences isolation and breaks down. His current self provides solace and encouragement to his former self. He explained his visual approach and concept for the video to Rolling Stone. “My visual aesthetic is always changing. But a reoccurring theme in my work would always be Surrealism, or Futurism. I really love to mix reality with imagination—I guess that’s my ‘thing,'” he said. “But for [the musi...

John Krasinski Reveals Surprising Job He Took After Filming The Office Pilot – HuffPost

John Krasinski may have been more surprised than anyone at the success of “The Office” because he actually took another job after filming the pilot.  And it wasn’t on the screen. Krasinski on Thursday night was both a guest and 50% of the audience for Stephen Colbert’s “Late Show.” And when the host touched on restaurants during the monologue, he asked Krasinski if he ever waited tables.  “Absolutely,” he said. “Even after the pilot of ‘The Office,’ I went back and waited tables. That’s how little confidence...”  Krasinski said he worked at the Odeon in New York City.  While the news surprised Colbert, Krasinski mentioned it on his YouTube show, “Some Good News,” last year during a discussion with “The Office” co-star Steve Carell.  “I was a waiter when I got that job,” K...
