Common cold, flu to make a comeback as people stop wearing masks, experts say – WRAL.com

By Amanda Lamb, WRAL reporter Raleigh, N.C. — As people start to drop their masks and return to normal, we'll be dealing with more coughs, colds and flus, health experts say. Face masks protect us from nearly every disease. Now, as we drop the mask, we will be vulnerable again. Doctors say the right thing to do will be to wear a mask when you are sick, even with a cold, to protect others. The percentage of people testing positive for the flu across the US in the week ending on May 15 remained "unusually low," the CDC reports. “If there was a silver lining to COVID, it was the masking that we were doing and we saw that during our traditional kind of flu season, there were virtually no cases of flu because of all the...

CDC investigating cases of heart inflammation in teens, young adults who got two-shot COVID vaccine. Heres what we know. – USA TODAY

Health officials are looking into reports of heart problems occurring in young adults and teenagers who have received the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines, according to a vaccine safety group with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In a May 17 meeting, the group presented reports of the heart condition, called myocarditis, to the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices from safety data collected by the Department of Defense, the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), and Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD). The news comes a few weeks after the Food and Drug Administration authorized Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine for minors 12 and older. Moderna's vaccine is currently authorized for people 18 and older. The safety group did not specify which vaccine was given in these cases.  ...

Morgan Wallen wins 3 Billboard Music Awards after not being invited to the show after racial slur controversy – Fox News

Morgan Wallen earned three trophies at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards despite not being invited to accept them. The 28-year-old country singer was awarded top country male artist, top country artist and top country album on Sunday, but his name and presence were kept out of the broadcast following a controversial video that emerged earlier this year that saw him use the N-word and other expletives.  Although Wallen has since apologized for his use of the racial slur, he was still dropped by his talent agency and had his songs pulled from the airwaves. Among the other consequences of his use of the racial slur was that Dick Clark Productions, which produces the awards, announced in April that he would not be welcomed at the 2021 show.  However, the Billboard Music Awards stopped short...

‘Charlie Bit My Finger’ sold as an NFT, could vanish from YouTube forever – Engadget

"Charlie Bit My Finger," which was once the most-viewed video on YouTube, could be leaving the platform for good. Collector 3F Music snapped up an NFT (non-fungible token) of the 56-second video, which shows an infant biting his brother's finger and giggling, for $760,999. Origin Protocol, which ran the auction, said in a statement the plan was to remove the original video from YouTube and then for it to be "memorialized on the blockchain." At the time of writing, the original "Charlie Bit My Finger" is still on YouTube, but it's unlisted. It has more than 883 million views. If the clip does get taken down, you might be able to watch it elsewhere if you really feel the need to re-live that experience. 3F Music, which also owns NFTs for the Disaster Girl and Overly Attached Girlfriend ...

Former CDC head urges kids’ COVID-19 vaccinations as agency probes rare heart issues – Fox News

As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) investigates rare reports of heart issues among adolescents and young adults who received COVID-19 vaccinations, a former acting head of the agency says there is no clear link yet to the vaccines, and encourages parents to keep getting kids vaccinated. Dr. Richard Besser, president and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, made multiple media appearances Monday morning, telling ABC and NBC co-hosts that the CDC is investigating reports of myocarditis — or unusual inflammation of the heart muscle — but so far, the agency has not found reported cases to exceed expected baseline rates. Besser explained that a CDC advisory committee on vaccine safety analyzes data each week for potential red flags, and though reports of myocardit...

Man Blinded for 40 Years Has Sight Partially Restored Using Gene Therapy – Gizmodo

One of the study’s researchers demonstrating the set-up used to confirm the success of the gene therapy treatment, including the use of specialized goggles seen above. Image: Sahel, et al., Nature Medicine Researchers say their experimental gene therapy was able to partially restore a man’s eyesight 40 years after he lost most of his vision. The findings are exciting, but the authors of the new study caution that more research will be needed to confirm the effectiveness of this treatment. Gene therapy has emerged as a promising approach for largely incurable ailments that are often caused by defective genetic mutations. It can include editing the genes of cells collected from the body in the lab, then putting them back in (CAR T-cell therapy for cancer is one example of this) or editi...

What Can Your Heart Rate Tell You? – The Wall Street Journal

What can you learn from the heart-rate metrics on your fitness tracker? The bottom line You may use your fitness tracker mostly to count steps, but don’t ignore your heart-rate metrics—they can tell you a lot about your health. Devices now deliver a variety of heart-rate measurements, including resting rate, walking rate and variability (the variation of time between beats). Some can be programmed to notify you of a possible problem, such as a heart rate that is unusually high, low or irregular. Without getting fancy, however, your basic heart rate alone can be revealing.

Charlie Bit My Finger will leave YouTube forever after selling for $760,999 as an NFT – MarketWatch

Charlie just bit off more than $760,000.  The 2007 video of a baby chomping his older brother’s finger is the latest viral meme-ory to be auctioned off as a non-fungible token (NFT) for big bucks. (A non-fungible token is a certificate of ownership for a digital asset that is unique and is not meant to serve as a means of exchange.) The 55-second video of Harry Davies-Carr, then 3, getting nipped by 1-year-old baby brother Charlie is one of the most-watched YouTube videos of all time. A recap: Harry giggles when Charlie nibbles his finger the first time. But when the baby bites down again — and even harder — Harry cries out in pain and admonishes his brother (and in an adorable British accent, to boot) with “Charlie, that really hurt!” Baby Charlie gigg...
