Attention, Simpsons nerds: John Swartzwelder gave an interview to The New Yorker – The A.V. Club

A John Swartzwelder cameo on The SimpsonsScreenshot: The Simpsons For Simpsons fans who have a very strong opinion on which specific range of episodes constitute “the good ones,” the mere fact that legendary writer John Swartzwelder gave an extremely rare interview to The New Yorker should be enough to click that link ASAP and see if he has anything to say about “Homer’s Enemy” or the story that he got special approval to work from home and then bought the booth he used to write in at his favorite diner and had it installed in his house (yes, he addresses both things). For anyone else, here’s the pitch: Swartzwelder is arguably (maybe arguably) the best writer to have worked on The Simpsons, responsible for nearly all of the best jokes in the best episodes up until he left the show in ...

COVID-19 Is a Vascular Disease: Coronavirus’ Spike Protein Attacks Vascular System on a Cellular Level – SciTechDaily

Representative images of vascular endothelial control cells (left) and cells treated with the SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein (right) show that the spike protein causes increased mitochondrial fragmentation in vascular cells. Credit: Salk Institute Salk researchers and collaborators show how the protein damages cells, confirming COVID-19 as a primarily vascular disease. Scientists have known for a while that SARS-CoV-2’s distinctive “spike” proteins help the virus infect its host by latching on to healthy cells. Now, a major new study shows that they also play a key role in the disease itself. The paper, published on April 30, 2021, in Circulation Research, also shows conclusively that COVID-19 is a vascular disease, demonstrating exactly how the SARS-CoV-2 virus damages and attacks th...

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown defends throwing state back into COVID lockdown – Daily Mail

Oregon Gov Kate Brown has blamed the rise in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations for her decision to reinstate COVID-19 restrictions on 36 counties. The declaration allows Brown to issue executive orders restricting activity and helps the state utilize federal COVID-relief funds, the governor's office said.  'In terms of why a statewide approach, it's about hospitalizations and health care capacity,' Brown said to KATU.     The new shutdowns come as Brown says an ‘overwhelming majority’ of new COVID-19 cases are coming from younger, unvaccinated ...

Invincible S1: Clearly TVs most fun superhero shows are on Amazon these days – Ars Technica

The trailer for Amazon's Invincible. The last few years have been great for viewers who enjoy standard-issue CW teen dramas (Gossip Girl forever!) but want a little something extra mixed in. Bridgerton blends in period piece flair and a Cinemax "Skinemax" pulse, while I Am Not Okay With This blends a teen story with dark supernatural mystery. And don't forget how Anna and the Apocalypse manages to weave together teen drama, Christmas stories, zombies, and musicals (albeit in a film). But no show has playfully leveraged genres with a teen narrative at its core as creatively as Invincible, Amazon Prime's new animated series based on the Robert Kirkman comics. The story follows ho-hum high school nobody Mark Grayson doing all the usual stuff: tryi...
