CDC reviewing Michigan woman’s death after Johnson & Johnson vaccine – WDIV ClickOnDetroit

Annie VanGeest was known as a super mom and a proud wife of 13 years. She was a master multi-tasker and staunch animal rescue supporter in her community of Saranac in Ionia County. Her death, though, is making news for reasons other than just her good work in her community. She received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine on April 8, five days before the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention paused its usage because of a few cases of blood clots in women -- three of which were fatal. Symptoms of the rare blood clots develop six to 15 days after getting the shot. “These initial symptoms are fairly vague and nonspecific,” said Dr. Tom Shimabukuro of the CDC COVID-19 Response. (It’s) mainly headache, but importantly, the headaches for these started six or more days after vaccination.” Ad...

Dax's relapse occurred last summer following an ATV accident that led him to take opioids. In a new interview with Self, Kristen said that Dax came to her right away when he recognized there was an issue. "We realized, 'OK, our math wasn’t working.' I mean, he admitted it so quickly. It was like, 'I did something that I don’t want to do. I’m going down a bad road. I want help. I want your help.' And I looked at him and I said,...

Man who accused Kevin Spacey of sexual assault has 10 days to identify himself so civil case can proceed, judge rules – CNN

The man, only identified in court documents as "C.D.," says he met the actor around 1981 when he was student in Spacey's acting class in Westchester County, New York, according to court documents. When he turned 14, he began a sexual relationship with Spacey, according to the documents. Manhattan Federal Judge Lewis A. Kaplan ruled the public has a legitimate interest in knowing the identity of the man, noting in this case "that interest is magnified because C.D. has made his allegations against a public figure." "C.D. argues that there is a competing public interest in keeping the identity of those who make sexual assault allegations anonymous so that they are not deterred from vindicating their rights," Kaplan wrote. In a recent letter to the court, C.D.'s attorney stated that ...

Coronavirus in Oregon: 540 new cases, 1 death as Washington County indoor dining restrictions become likely – OregonLive

The Oregon Health Authority on Monday reported one new COVID-19 death and 540 coronavirus cases, with cases plateauing over the past week. After more than a month of steady gains, Oregon reported a 3% decrease in cases last week. But hospitalizations, which trail cases, are still increasing. Gov. Kate Brown, in an effort to slow hospital admissions, is poised to extend business restrictions this week on counties with the highest per capita case rates. Those limitation are now expected to apply to Washington County. Washington County recorded nearly 210 cases per 100,000 residents over the past two weeks, according to state data — a statistic that would move it into the “extreme risk” category, which imposes the most stringent rules for gathering at places like restaurants, theaters an...

More than 20 states not ordering full share of COVID vaccine doses – msnNOW

As the pace of vaccinations continues to slow across the country, more than 20 states are not ordering all the available COVID-19 vaccine doses allocated to them by the federal government, according to a CBS News tally.  The figure is the latest sign of lessening demand for vaccinations around the country, as health officials shift from triaging a flood of people clamoring for the shots to targeting harder-to-reach communities.  CBS News reached out to health departments in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, and among the 38 states that responded, 22 said they weren't ordering all the doses available to them for the week of May 3. In Arkansas, no new doses were ordered for the first time since the nationwide vaccination campaign began, citing an ample supply ...

Rustom Antia, an evolutionary biologist at Emory University, told the paper that the virus is "unlikely to go away." "But we want to do all we can to check that it’s likely to become a mild infection," he said.
