Give it up for Girls5eva – The A.V. Club

Busy Philipps, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Sara Bareilles, and Paula Pell in Girls5eva Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Thursday, May 6. All times are Eastern. Top pick Girls5eva (Peacock, 3:01 a.m., complete first season): “The quirky humor of Peacock’s musical comedy Girls5eva is a hallmark of series creator Meredith Scardino’s ongoing collaboration with executive producers Tina Fey and Robert Carlock. Scardino previously wrote on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and her work in Girls5eva serves up the same brand of highly specific absurdist jokes that powered the Netflix comedy, along with the rest of Fey’s oeuvre. The show’s frothiness is a welcome escape, its eight-episode first season a quick binge of amusingly ridiculous running jokes and witticisms (a hilarious o...

‘Turning the Corner’: U.S. Covid Outlook Reaches Most Hopeful Point Yet – The New York Times

In parts of New York City, mask wearing has been ubiquitous throughout the pandemic. But even there, the scene is shifting amid C.D.C. recommendations that fully vaccinated Americans no longer need to wear a mask outdoors when alone or in small groups; on recent sunny days, large crowds have flocked to Central Park, and more and more, people are going maskless along sidewalks. New infections in New York fell by two-thirds in the past month, dipping to around 1,200 new cases a day. Citywide, the number of people hospitalized with the virus recently dropped to below 100. With 40 percent of adult New Yorkers fully vaccinated, the city is barreling toward a full reopening. Starting May 19, restaurants, stores, theaters and museums will be allowed to return to near full capacity for the first ...

‘Family Matters’ Didn’t Welcome Jaleel White, AKA Steve Urkel, To The Cast, He Claims – Deadline

The cast of ’80s and ’90s sitcom Family Matters didn’t exactly make Jaleel White feel right at home when he joined. Speaking in an episode of TV One’s Uncensored that will air Sunday at 10 PM ET, White remembers the cold shoulder he perceived. “I was not welcomed to the cast at all,” he said. “They know what it was…I didn’t think anything of it being cast to be on Family Matters, because it was supposed to be a guest spot, one and done.” Of course, White’s character, Steve Urkel, proved to be more than a one-shot appearance, going on to become one of the most iconic sitcom characters of all-time. White also remembered his late costar, Michelle THomas, who died in 1998 of stomach cancer at age 30. She played his girlfriend on the show. “Michelle Thomas became a ver...

Your Vinaigrette Is Missing Fish Sauce

Most people know fish sauce as a quintessential Southeast Asian ingredient—a core element in stir-fries, pad thais, and briny dressings like nuoc cham. The condiment’s deeply savory flavor tastes like the essence of the sea, but not explicitly and bracingly fishy, which makes it a powerful source of salinity in many recipes. Like a hint of anchovy, the inky liquid can bring out the flavor of fresh seafood. It can round out sweet tomato sauces. (Try it!) And in a vinaigrette, it can add that umami backbone that shines through equally in high-heat roasts and crunchy fresh salads. At a Vietnamese pop-up I cooked for seven years ago, we used a fish sauce vinaigrette to aggressively dress salads like our cabbage-based goi ga: a chicken salad with fre...

California bar owner busted for selling fake COVID-19 vaccination cards – New York Post

Move over fake IDs. The new illicit social currency is fake COVID-19 vaccination cards, and a California bar owner has been busted for selling them. Todd Anderson, the owner of the Old Corner Saloon in Clements, sold the fake cards to undercover agents multiple times, prosecutors said. The phony pandemic passports allegedly fetched only $20, according to officials. Anderson “was in possession of a number of other unfilled out COVID-19 vaccination cards, a laminating machine, laminate and several other cards that were finished,” said Luke Blehm with the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. “And it appears that they were waiting to be given to people.” Anderson is charged with identity theft, forging government documents, and fal...
