Global COVID-19 death toll more than double the estimates: study – Al Jazeera English

Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation says pandemic has caused nearly 6.9 millions deaths much higher than the 3.25 million reported. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused nearly 6.9 million deaths across the world, more than double the number officially recorded, a new analysis from the University of Washington, DC’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) estimated. Deaths go unreported as most countries only record those that occur in hospitals or of patients with a confirmed infection, the report which came out on Thursday, revealed. Current reported estimates showed more than 155 million infections worldwide with at least 3.25 million deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University data. The IHME is an independent health research organisation that provides a compa...

Shayna Baszler has the best response to Jericho’s cardboard fall – Cageside Seats

Earlier today, I pointed out why the ending spot of AEW’s first ever Blood & Guts match was disappointing to so many fans; it was an underwhelming visual to see Chris Jericho surrounded by cardboard that commentators told us was concrete. One point I should clarify is that this finish was not nearly as bad as the dud bomb at Revolution. Nonetheless, it was still a flat finish to an otherwise very exciting match. I’ve seen some bizarre pushback to fans who have criticized this final spot. One such response that makes no sense at all comes from Wrestling Observer Live’s Bryan Alvarez, who suggested that anybody who is complaining about the finish should stop watching Dynamite. What a silly overreaction that is; the implication that fans shouldn’t watch a television show unless the...

Indian SARS-CoV-2 variant shows enhanced host cell entry and immune evasion – News-Medical.Net

A study conducted by researchers in Germany has found that the B.1.617 variant of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that has emerged in India entered certain types of lung and intestine cells with slightly increased efficiency compared with the original wild-type strain. The B.1.617 variant is the lineage thought to be responsible for the sharp rise in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases and deaths in India over recent weeks. The team – from the German Primate Center in Göttingen, the University of Göttingen Medical Center, the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nürnberg and Hannover Medical School – also reports that the entry of B.1.617 into lung and intestinal cells was blocked following treatment with soluble angiotensin-...

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are taking the opportunity on Archie’s second birthday to push a vaccine drive across the globe. "While some places are on the verge of healing, in so many parts of the world, communities continue to suffer," Markle and Harry described. Family of Chris Cornell settles with doctor over his death – The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The family of Chris Cornell and a doctor who they alleged over-prescribed him drugs before he died have agreed to a settle a lawsuit. Court documents filed by attorneys for the rock singer’s widow, Vicky Cornell, and their children, Toni and Christopher Nicholas Cornell, said a confidential settlement had been reached. The documents were filed in April, but they had gone unnoticed before City News Service reported on them Thursday. The Cornell family alleged in the lawsuit filed in 2018 in Los Angeles Superior Court that medication, especially the anti-anxiety drug lorazepam, prescribed by Dr. Robert Koblin led to erratic behavior from the Soundgarden front man before his death in Detroit in 2017 at age 52. Coroner’s investigators in Michigan ruled Cornell’s death a su...

Coronavirus in Oregon: 763 cases, 5 deaths as governor eases restrictions for gyms, theaters – OregonLive

The Oregon Health Authority on Thursday reported five COVID-19 deaths and 763 coronavirus cases. Daily cases have declined slightly over the past week and the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 has also fallen from a recent spring peak. Gov. Kate Brown on Thursday announced changes to capacity limits in gyms and theaters. Twenty-four counties in Oregon, including Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties, are under “high-risk” restrictions that faced nuanced tweaks. Gyms and theaters in high-risk areas can now have a maximum indoor occupancy of 10% capacity or 50 people, whichever is larger. That’s a shift from the old rules, which set maximum indoor occupancy at 25% capacity or 50 people, whichever was smaller. Although specifics will vary by business, the changes gener...
