The Korean Art of Refreshing With Hot Soup

There are some experiences during Korean childhood that are so universal, you almost take them for granted. The bowl-shaped haircut between the ages of three and seven. Taste testing throughout your mom’s all-day kimchi-making sessions. And, of course, going out to eat with your family at a Korean restaurant that serves boiling hot soups in sturdy stone dolsot-ttukbaegi bowls. As a kid, you sit there, eating the scalding soup and plates of banchan portioned out for you, listening to the conversations happening at the table. At some point in the dinner, inevitably, one of the adults will utter this expression: “Ahh, shiwonhada!” (“아, 시원하다!”) At least, that’s what happened to me many times, having dinners with my mom and dad at soup houses like ...

Rag’n’Bone Man Is Charging to U.K. Chart Crown With Life By Misadventure – Billboard

It’s hard to see anyone but Rag’n’Bone Man claiming the title. He’ll enjoy a boost Tuesday night (May 11) when he appears at the 2021 Brit Awards to perform “Anywhere Away From Here,” his collaboration with Pink. “Anywhere” is blasting to the U.K. Top 20 of the national singles chart this week and should be the frame's highest climber. Life By Misadventure leads an all-new Top 5 on the Official Chart Update. Indeed, it’s a Top 10 stacked with new releases, eight in total. Michael Ball rolls in at No. 2 with his 27th album We Are More Than One (Decca), while YouTuber and recording artist Dodie is chasing her highest chart position with Build A Problem (Doddleoddle), new at No. 3 Brighton post-punk group Squid are closing in on a Top 5 debut with Bright Green Field (Warp), new at No. 4 on t...

COVID-19 patients in India are developing deadly black fungus infections which can lead to blindness – Business Insider

Some hospitals in India have seen a rise in mucormycosis, a life-threatening infection known as "black fungus." Experts say steroids used to treat COVID-19 may be linked fueling the uptick by dampening patients' immune systems. One doctor in Mumbai said 11 of his patients have required life-saving eye removal surgery.  Visit Insider's homepage for more stories. In the wake of India's second wave of COVID-19, hospitals are reporting an uptick in cases of mucormycosis or "black fungus" — a serious but rare fungal infection. Dr. Akshay Nair, an eye surgeon who works at three hospitals in Mumbai, India, told the BBC he saw at least 40 patients with the fungal ...

Covid-19: Hopes for ‘Herd Immunity’ Fade as Virus Hurtles Toward Becoming Endemic – The New York Times

Here’s what you need to know: Health care workers administered coronavirus tests in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on Tuesday.Credit...Ishara S. Kodikara/Agence France-Presse — Getty Images Early in the pandemic, there was hope that the world would one day achieve herd immunity, the point when the coronavirus lacks enough hosts to spread easily. But over a year later, the virus is crushing India with a fearsome second wave and surging in countries from Asia to Latin America. Experts now say it is changing too quickly, new more contagious variants are spreading too easily and vaccinations are happening too slowly for herd immunity to be within reach anytime soon. That means if the virus continues to run rampant through much of the world, it is well on its way to becoming endemic, an ever-prese...

NBC cancels next year’s Golden Globes for lack of diversity – Al Jazeera English

US television network NBC has announced it would drop its broadcast of the Golden Globes ceremony in 2022 after a Hollywood backlash over the ethics of the group that hands out the annual awards for film and television and its lack of diversity. Actor Tom Cruise joined a revolt led by streaming platforms and studios, returning the three Golden Globes he won for his roles in Jerry Maguire, Magnolia and Born on the Fourth of July, industry media outlets Variety and Deadline Hollywood reported. NBC’s announcement of its decision on Monday came even after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which hands out the awards, agreed to recruit more Black members and make other changes over the next 18 months. The network had initially welcomed the plan but later said it would wait to ...

Phil Lord and Chris Miller to try and pull an Adam Mckay with serious COVID pandemic movie – The A.V. Club

Phil Lord and Chris MillerPhoto: Amy Sussman (Getty Images) Transitioning from funny movies to “funny” movies that are actually about real shit has gone really well for Adam McKay, effectively giving him a second career as a serious filmmaker (even though the “we strictly do ‘80s Joel” moment in Step Brothers was already better than most movies), and now it looks like a couple of other comedy directors are going to try and make a similar career move. According to Deadline, Phil Lord and Chris Miller have picked up the rights to The Premonition: A Pandemic Story, a new book by Michael Lewis (who also wrote The Big Short, lest you think the McKay comparison is arbitrary) about a number of “medical visionaries” who saw the dangers of the COVID-19 pandemic coming and tried in vain to war...
