Mucormycosis reported in Indias coronavirus patients: What to know about black fungus infection – Fox News

Doctors in India are reporting cases of mucormycosis or "black fungus," a serious but rare fungal infection, in some of the country’s coronavirus patients. The infection is caused by a group of molds called mucormycetes which live throughout the environment and typically do not agitate otherwise healthy people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  However, in those who have health problems, or take medications that lower the body’s ability to fight off germs and sickness, it could infect the sinuses or lungs when inhaled through the air or on injured skin. Diabetes, cancer, organ transplants, stem cell transplants, low white blood cells, long-term corticosteroid use, injection drug use, too much iron, skin injury and premature or low birth weight are all ...

The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID vaccine is a top target of conspiracy theories – CBS News

The Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine became a target of conspiracy theories and disinformation campaigns as soon as it was announced, reaching millions of people on sites like Twitter, Reddit and 4chan, according to a recent analysis from a cyber defense firm. COVID-19 conspiracy narratives, like the false belief that the vaccine was delayed for political reasons, flourished on social networks in the fall and early winter, according to the New York tech security firm Blackbird. The firm created an algorithm to analyze posts in real-time by hunting for signals of what CEO Wasim Khaled calls "synthetic amplification," which indicate activity by botnets and anti-vaccination influencers.  These bogus notions about the vaccines, amplified by a relatively small number of fake account...

Why This Is Us is ending on NBC This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman has been hinting that the show would end around Season 6 for years. In a 2019 Hollywood Reporter interview, after the Season 3 finale had aired, he said: "Our characters are all finding themselves as we near what I like to consider kind of our midpoint of the TV series. They're at some real crossroads... where you find the characters right now, you're in the middle of their story. If you were in the movie theater, you'd be at the moment where you're about an hour into the movie wondering what's going to happ...

Mass Extinction in The Human Gut Revealed by Fossil Remains of 2,000-Year-Old Feces – ScienceAlert

The microbes living in our gut are way less diverse than they were 2,000 years ago. That's one of the key findings from a genomic analysis of fossilized human feces from rock shelters across North America and Mexico. Eight samples dating to between 1,000 and 2,000 years ago reveal microbes that are totally new to science, as well as others completely absent from the gut microbiome today.   By contrast, the modern gut microbiome contains vastly more antibiotic-resistant microbes than those of our ancestors. These findings could help us understand the connection - if there is one - between our diminished microbiome and the higher modern incidence of 'industrial' chronic diseases such as diabetes and obesity. The human microbiome is a fascinating and complex machine, and in recent years...
